September is typically the start of the fall gaming rush, and even in the face of theongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year is no different. Spellbreak (September 3)

Battle royale games are a dime a dozen nowadays, and so each new entry in the genre has to make a concerted effort to stand out from the pack.Spellbreakis unlike any other battle royale gamereleased so far, with its focus on class-based gameplay and the use of magic in the place of firearms. It looks like an action-RPG spin on the battle royale genre, and that alone may be enough to make sure that it finds an audience.

Spellbreakwill be free-to-play on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on September 3.

Marvel’s Avengers (September 4)

Crystal Dynamics has been working hard onMarvel’s Avengersfor years, and soon the studio’s hard work will finally pay off. Hot off the heels of multiple beta tests,Marvel’s Avengers' servers will be going live on September 1 for those that purchase one of the game’s special editions, but its official release date is September 4. The game features a single-player story campaign that sees various members of the titular Avengers team reuniting to fight against thethreat of AIM, while also boasting a live-service style co-op mode with various missions that players can complete with friends. WithMarvel’s Avengersbeing a live-service game, fans can expect Crystal Dynamics to support it for the long-term, with new playable characters and more content to be added for free in the months ahead. The game will also be getting ported to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X with some enhancements, and there will even be a free upgrade available.

NBA 2K21 (September 4)

NBA 2K21is the latest entry in the long-runningNBA 2Kseries, and it will be interesting to see if the new game is able to address some of the concerns fans had after last year’s entry. Some are worried thatNBA 2K21might not bring enough new content to the table or address fans' concerns about microtransactions, but we’ll find out sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, legal issues surrounding the game’s development doomed its planned franchise and made it highly unlikely that fans would ever see it remastered for modern platforms. But against all odds,THQ Nordicis bringing backKingdoms of AmalurasKingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, with plans to release some brand new content for the game after launch.

Spelunky 2 (September 15)

One of the most critically-acclaimed indie games of all time is the originalSpelunky, and so it’s no surprise that there’s quite a bit of hype forSpelunky 2.Spelunky 2looks to be retaining everything that made the originalSpelunkypopular, while also adding a slew of new features to keep fans on their toes. Whether or notSpelunky 2can live up to the legacy of its predecessor remains to be seen, but fans will find out in a couple of weeks.

Crysis Remastered (September 18)

The originalCrysiswas known for its cutting-edge graphics and action-packed first-person shooter gameplay.Crysis Remasteredwill take what was once one of the world’s most visually-impressive games and improve the graphics even further so that it can stand toe to toe with the graphical juggernauts on modern gaming consoles. Already available for the Switch,this version ofCrysis Remasteredwas delayedso Crytek could add some extra polish and address fan feedback, so here’s hoping that extra development time has paid off.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds (September 18)

The abysmal critical reception forWWE 2K20saw2K Sports outright cancelWWE 2K21to give Visual Concepts more time to developWWE 2K22. But while a proper pro wrestling simulation game won’t be available this year, 2K Sports is still releasing a newWWE 2Kgame in the form ofWWE 2K Battlegrounds. An arcadey fighting game,WWE 2K Battlegroundsfeatures supernatural elements, ridiculous arenas, and a vast roster of playable characters made up of modern wrestlers and past stars. Fan reception toWWE 2K Battlegroundshas been mixed so far, but we’ll find out soon enough if it’s actually fun to play or not.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (September 22)

Vanillaware is known for its unique art styles and making risky, experimental games. The same can be said for its new game,13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, which has been out in Japan since 2019. A real-time strategy game of sorts,13 Sentinelsblends a variety of genres while telling its story of 13 different playable characters. While it remains to be seen if the game will appeal to western audiences, it has proven to be quite popular with Japanese critics, earning a number of awards in the country.Super Smash Bros. Ultimatedirector Masahiro Sakurai has also praisedAegis Rim, calling it a game that everyone should play. Needless to say, that’s quite the endorsement, and it will be interesting to see if it lives up to the hype.

Serious Sam 4 (September 24)

Serious Sam 4is the long-awaited return of the classic first-person shooter franchise. Originally set to launch in August 2020,Serious Sam 4has been pushed backto its new September 24 date. Those that want to play it on day one will need to do so either on PC or through Google Stadia, as the game won’t be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or any other platforms until some point in 2021 at the earliest.

Mafia: Definitive Edition (September 25)

Earlier this summer, Hangar 13 releasedMafia: Trilogy, which included enhanced versions ofMafia 2and3, with the promise that the original game would make its debut later. After a short delay,Mafia: Definitive Editionis finally set to launch in late September, bringing with it revamped gameplay and modern visuals. For many modern gamers, this may be their first chance to play the originalMafia, and so there’s quite a bit of excitement for the project.

Genshin Impact (September 28)

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildis one of the most critically-acclaimed video games ever made, and so it’s not exactly a surprise that video game developers are looking to emulate its success. One such game that is clearly inspired byBreath of the Wildis the upcomingGenshin Impact, which features a large open world for players to explore using a variety of different playable characters. Its similarities toBreath of the Wildcan only help it, but it will be interesting to see how the game is ultimately able to make a name for itself and carve out its own identity.

Genshin Impactwill launch September 28 for PC, PS4, and mobile devices, with a Switch version also in the works.
