Now, Respawn Entertainment has confirmed many of the features coming in Season 20: Breakout, including the fact that there is not a newApex Legendscharacter or legend overhaul this time around. Respawn instead put its eye on some core mechanics, showing how willing the company is to experiment and keep the game fresh.

As a summary,EVO shieldsare no longer floor loot, a new gameplay mechanic called Legend Upgrades is being introduced, Ranked is getting refreshed, and new events and updates will also arrive alongside the new season. It remains to be seen how all of theseApex Legendschanges are received, but there’s plenty to break down.

Apex Legends' New Legends Upgrade System

In some ways,Apex Legendsis simplifying its in-game economy and rolling Shield upgrades into one system with Legend Upgrades. An offshoot of this is how crafters no longer need materials, only being able to craft one healing-related item per character now. Players will no longer be able to find Shields on the ground, instead needing to level up throughout the match to improve their Shields. They will be able to do so via combat, via certain class actions, and other modifiers. This will level up their shield core from white (level 1) to blue (level 2) to purple (level 3) to Red (level 4). At level 2 and level 3, players will also be able to pick between two legend upgrades for their character in the match. These may slightly adjust or modify the character or introduce brand-new abilities so players can tailor their playstyle to some degree.

Examples of this include Ballistic being able to see ammo, Octane taking less explosive damage,Lifelinegetting a self-revive, and Wattson being able to throw down two, somewhat weaker Pylons instead of one.

It’s worth noting thatcoreApex Legendsgameplay experienceslike shield swapping are still viable via this new system; it just works slightly differently. If players have a blue shield and defeat someone with a purple shield, they can pick up temporary shield pips that upgrade their shield for a short time. They can also restore their shields by grabbing “Shield Cores” off their defeated enemies. How different it is in practice remains to be seen, but it was very important for the Respawn team that the core experience was streamlined, not removed.
