An artist has shared their incredible fan-made designs of NES-styleXboxcontrollers. TheNES controller is an iconic design, one that is instantly recognizable even to gamers who didn’t live through its original era.
It’s always interesting to see how different artists choose to pay homage to retro designs using more modern brands. As the retro consoles get older, it certainly seems to be becoming a bigger phenomenon. This doesn’t necessarily always come in the form of artwork, either - one retro gamer managed to getWindows 98 running on an Xbox Series S console, allowing them to run older games on new hardware in an interesting way. As technology evolves players will always find new ways to show love to gaming systems of days gone by.

The amazing design comes from Redditor Snowway22, who took their design online, imagining what Xbox would look like if it came out in the 1980s. The NES-inspired shape of the controller is great, but each iteration of the design remains distinctly Xbox with the iconic color scheme. It’s interesting to think that while most gamers hear “retro” and think of consoles such as the NES and Sega Genesis, when at this point, consoles such as theoriginal Xbox would now be considered to be retro. It certainly opens up the opportunity in the future for retro designs based on the earlier Xbox consoles.
The post even attracted the attention of the officialXboxReddit account, which joked “Each controller accompanies a copy of Ultra Clippy Only Child.” Other Redditors were filled with praise for the design, with many even claiming they’d buy it right now if possible. One user did point out that the D-pad for a design like this likely would’ve been different due to an old Nintendo patent, but it was less a criticism and more of an interesting fact about the history of retro designs.
While fans are clearly still on board with the Xbox brand, Microsoft has been having a tough time as of late. No matter what it does,Microsoft can’t seem to close its acquisition of Activision, with more stumbling blocks being provided at every hurdle. The rocky release ofRedfallhas done little to alleviate any of the building pressure on the company, with many questioning its first-party output as of late. The Xbox Games Showcase in June can be the perfect opportunity to set things right, and do some course correction for theXboxbrand going forward.
