With the game still relatively new, it will be interesting to see what else it is hiding that is yet to be discovered by the community.
Redditor nothing_in posted the Easter egg online, showing off a screenshot from the remastered version of the multiplayer map Rust inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Buried in the sand is a skull with a knife embedded in its eye, which is almost certainly a reference to the ending of the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, where Soap MacTavish launches a throwing knife into the eye of General Shepard in a desert environment. It remains one of the most iconic moments in the series' history, so it’s cool to see Sledgehammer Games pay homage to it on Rust. If it isn’t an intentional reference, it’s a massive coincidence and seems far too unlikely to be the case.
Bringing backfan-favorite maps inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3was the priority for Sledgehammer Games with this new release. Classics such as Highrise, Karachi, and Afghan returned, among others. Including small secrets like this is a great way to breathe new life into them beyond remastered graphics. It’s great to see the franchise remember its roots every once in a while, as without the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2being so revered by fans, it’s unlikely for there ever to have been a reboot in the first place.
While the initial reception of 2023’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3may not have gone how Sledgehammer Games wanted, there’s plenty to be optimistic about going forward.
