Babylon’s Fallis an upcoming action RPG coming from PlatinumGames and Square Enix. The game has garnered a lot of excitement from fans of both studios' projects in the past. The two companies have worked together on other well-received games likeNieR: Automata. Fans of another PlatinumGames title have likely clocked the resemblancesBabylon’s Fallhas to the Nintendo Switch-exclusiveAstral Chain. The games have some similarities in their gameplay despite very different game worlds, andBabylon’s Fallhas some opportunities to build on the success of its predecessor.

Astral Chainwas well received after its release on Switch. The game had a unique spin on the fast-paced combat style that many of PlatinumGames' alumni helped pioneer. Many of the studios' founders worked onDevil MayCrywhile still at Capcom, and then later withBayonettaas the newly-formed PlatinumGames. The combat was swift and allowed for a lot of freedom in battle using the familiar-like chain features.Babylon’s Fallhas shown off combat just as fluidand quick asAstral Chain, but with a stark contrast to the sci-fi world ofAstral Chainwith its dark fantasy world.Astral Chainhas a strong gameplay foundation for it to build from though.

Babylon’s Fall Could Expand on the Basics of Astral Chain

PlatinumGames has certainly cemented its place as one of the premier developers for fast-paced action titles. In this era where Soulsborne and other ARPG subgenres are as popular as ever, excitement for new games can build really quickly. That seems to be the case withBabylon’s Fallwhich seems like a union betweenFinal Fantasyelements with the fluid and stylish combat PlatinumGames is known for. The success ofAstral Chain’s basics could be built on inBabylon’s Fall, specifically with its stated live-service nature.

It’s worth mentioning that by virtue of being a live service,Babylon’s Fallwill have some pitfalls to overcome. Games likeOutridersandBorderlands 3have run into some speedbumps by not always catering the new content that’s released to what many fans might want.Godfallhas fallen into a similar situation with some fans. A big complaint that players have is the lack of new character options coming to the games. WhileBabylon’s Fallhas revealed some story elementsit hasn’t released much info about how the mechanics will work specifically. There are some clues for excited fans to dig into within some of the trailers that have been released thus far.

From thegameplay trailers released forBabylon’s Fallso far, it does seem like the game will feature some kind of class system. This is a big departure fromAstral Chain, which had skill trees but not necessarily defined classes. This could prove to be a strength forBabylon’s Fallthough, if each archetype feels unique. Hopefully, PlatinumGames will focus on releasing new ones as well going forward. This seems to be something fans really want in this style of live ARPG and could become a great way forBabylon’s Fallto build off of the strong foundation laid out byAstral Chainwhile defining itself as a unique experience.
