Gaming is not cheap, and that seems to go double for theNintendo Switch. It is well known that first-party Switch games rarely, if ever, go on sale; in fact, 2017 titles likeThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildandSuper Mario Odysseystill cost roughly the same amount as they did on their launch dates. While third-party games are more likely to be discounted, it is not unusual forSwitchphysical copies to cost more than their PS4 and Xbox One counterparts.

That said, there are always exceptions, and that holds true forNintendo Switch shooter games. If someone is looking to add an FPS or a third-person shooter to their libraries, these Switch games are relatively cheap.

Third-Person Shooter

Released in 2019 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One,World War Zneeded more than two years to make the jump to the Nintendo Switch. Putting aside the game’s actual quality, this is an impressive port that retains everything that made the original version fun to play; mainly, lots and lots of zombies to mow down.

As aLeft 4 Dead-style co-op shooter,World War Zis somewhat run-of-the-mill and does not offer much that allows it to stand out from the crowd. However, the game is still fun, and there is some depth courtesy of the class system. A group of friends looking for a third-person shooter to play together can do much worse than this zombie-themed romp.

First-Person Shooter

The definition of bang for your buck, this collectionincludesBorderlands: Game of the Year Edition,Borderlands 2, andBorderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Combined, these games should easily keep someone busy for more than a hundred hours, and that does not take into consideration the sheer amount of replay value offered by thedifferent classes availablein each entry.

Out of these three,Borderlands 2is the pick of the bunch as it delivers by far the strongest story and roster of characters. The other two games are also solid, withThe Pre-Sequelhaving arguably the best gameplay.

Side-Scrolling Shoot ‘Em Up

A stylish shoot ‘em up that puts players in the hot seat of planes amidst a war,Sine Mora EXlooks absolutely gorgeous on the Nintendo Switch. While the story can be a bit difficult to digest since it frequently jumps back and forth between different characters, the gameplay is addictive and explosive.

The game is pretty challenging, and newcomers to shmups might initially find the levels overwhelming. However,Sine Mora EXgives players all the tools they need to not only hold their own in battle but also feel like powerhouses.

Action-Adventure

Oddworldis, well, an odd series. The PS1 puzzle platformers come packed with grim visuals that are completely at odds with the genre’s more family-friendly image, although the games themselves are fantastic. While the main series struggled to transition to 3D, theOddworld: Stranger’s Wrathspin-off managed to strike gold by blending third-person exploration and platforming with first-person gunplay.

The titular Stranger is a bounty hunter who hunts down outlaws in a setting that seems to take some inspiration from Spaghetti Westerns. Even after all these years,Stranger’s Wrath’s gameplay still holds up, as does its unique world and fantastic enemy designs.

Open-World Third-Person Shooter

Saints Row: The ThirdandSaints Row 4can be picked up for reasonable prices, and both games are a great deal of fun as far as open-world shooters are concerned. Although it takes place on basically the same map,Saints Row 4changes the core experience by throwing superpowers into the equation; as awesome as these abilities are, they significantly reduce the importance of standard weapons, making them almost obsolete. This is a shame as the game has quite a solid selection of guns.

Conversely,Saints Row: The Thirdplays out closer to a typical third-person shooter, albeit one that loves to frequently fly off the rails. Set in Steelport, a city run by an international crime syndicate, the 3rd Street Saints must build up their forces so they can go up against this powerful organization. The story is serviceable, butSaints Row: The Thirdis all about the freedom it gives players to create chaos within its sandbox.

Roguelike Third-Person Shooter

Building upon the foundations of the first game,Risk of Rain 2drops the player on an alien world and challenges them to find a teleporter and make it out alive. Considering this world is packed with enemies that get progressively stronger, surviving is easier said than done.

Risk of Rain 2puts aside any real semblance of a narrative to focus exclusively on gameplay, and the latter happens to be fantastic. Along with randomly generated levels, this roguelike enhances its replayability through arobust roster of playable characters, most of which need to be unlocked by the player.
