It’s one thing to say thatDemon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaibaboasts an engrossing story, that of Tanjiro Kamadoand his membership in the Demon Slayer Corps to find a curse for his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a demon after a horrific attack. However, it’s another thing entirely to see Tanjiro and his companions work towards their personal stories in extremely flashy combat, showing off colorful techniques empowered by solid animation.

8Attack On Titan (2013)

Aside from its approach tohope amid sheer terror and despair,Attack On Titanhas become appealing to shonen fans for its ambitious approach to both its narrative and combat. Unfortunately for Eren, this quest isn’t easy. The only hope the Survey Corps have against the Titans are their specialized training through Vertical Maneuvering Equipment, specially-crafted gear that grants them incredible mobility in all three-dimensions. It’s this man-against-giant approach, as well as the anime’s fast-paced and thrilling combat, that makesAttack On TitanrivalBrotherhoodin terms of amazing fight scenes to match an equally-engrossing story. The show’s later seasons also challenge the status quo introduced in the opening arcs.

1Claymore (2007)

Despite the rather classic ambiance and rather ordinary medieval premise ofClaymore, it boasts both quite the compelling narrative and grounded combat system. As such,Claymoreis fit for those who want a more serious take on the shonen genre, or those who want a simple tale of a traveling warrior that grows complex after each episode.

The anime is set on a medieval island where Yoma or monstrous shape-shifters exist as a constant threat to villages. Fighting the Yoma are Claymores, silver-haired, silver-armoredclaymore-wieldinghalf-Yoma hybrids created by the mysterious Organization. Protagonist Claire, one of 47 Claymores, is eventually dragged into a conspiracy that could change the way the world works. However, her adventures are plagued with combat against Yoma and even her fellow Claymores.
