One ofCall of Duty’s most popular maps is going to be returning inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward confirmed via a new teaser. The map is Rust from the classicCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and it will be released as part ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Season 2 content. However, it isn’t clear if Rust will be available at the beginning of Season 2, which is scheduled for February 11, or if Infinity Ward will save it for a mid-season release.
The reveal of Rust as a newModern Warfaremap comes somewhat indirectly from Infinity Ward. CertainCall of Dutyfansites and fan-run social media accounts were given an Augmented Reality card all the way back in July. These AR cards have apparently been updated as of February 7 so that they show new content when viewed in AR. CharlieIntel has been able to confirm that the AR card now shows theRust mapin its background with the words “Season Two” in the foreground.

Rust, as noted, comes fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,and it was a very popular map due to its small size, fast-paced action, and interesting attack angles. Rust has only ever been features in one otherCall of Duty game, the China-exclusiveCall of Duty: Online. There was a Rust Easter egg inCall of Duty: Advanced Warfare, though, with a smaller version of the map built out of various objects just outside the bounds of Compound.
Rust was also recreated forCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare, in which it was renamed Excess to better fit the style and themes of the game. Where Rust is traditionally a dilapidated factory of sorts, Excess is a luxurious rooftop location on top of a skyscraper. Excess does play quite different from Rust, though, sinceInfinite Warfaregives players jetpacks.
For now, Infinity Ward has yet to publicly confirm that Rust is coming toCall of Duty: Modern Warfarein Season Two, though it can still essentially be considered official.Infinity Wardwill likely make the direct announcement and release a related trailer in the next several days.
Season Two ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfarewill start on February 11. The new season has also teased the return offan-favorite character Ghost. Expect more details about the new season and its battle pass soon.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
