Square Enix has released a breakdown of howCrisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionwill perform across all platforms. 2022 marks the 25th anniversary ofFinal Fantasy 7, the beloved entry in the long-running JRPG series that has been in the limelight a lot recently thanks to the release of 2020’sFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, which is just the first part in a new saga reimagining the iconic PlayStation game. Earlier this year Square Enix announced that the game’s PSP prequel,Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, will be receiving a huge upgrade, and now it’s revealed the demanding performance the game requires on consoles and PC.Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7first released on the PlayStation Portable in 2007 and follows Zack Fair, a character referenced multiple times in the 1997 JRPG but whose story was never fully told in the original game.Crisis Corefollows Zack as he rises through the ranks of SOLDIER, meeting characters such as Cloud Strife and Sephiroth, shedding light onelements ofFF7’s narrative while being set years before it.RELATED:Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Devs Go In-Depth on Changes From the OriginalSquare Enix has been adamant inCrisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion’s marketing that the game is “more than a remaster,” featuring fully rerecorded voice acting featuring the cast ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, andbrand-new visuals rebuilt on Unreal Engine 4. Given the intricate reworking of the visuals and gameplay, it’s no surprise thatCrisis Core Reunion’s technical performance is more on par with modern titles, and a performance breakdown has now revealed that while the game will be 4K/60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X, last-gen consoles will run the game at 1080p/30fps, except Xbox One X, which will run the game at 4K.
Nintendo Switch players will experienceCrisis Coreat a maximum resolution of 720p both in docked and handheld modes, and while Xbox Series S will receive a day 1 patch brining the game to 60 frames-per-second playback, the unpatched version is capped at 30. Finally, the Steam release features a slew of graphical and performance options, including the ability to run the game at 120fps.Square Enix has claimed that the frame-rates may be variableon some platforms, however the listed figures are the maximum frame-rate outputs.
The vastly different performance metrics reemphasize thatCrisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunionis far more than just a simple PSP port, and it will be interesting to see how close each version comes to these performance targets when the game releases next month.
