Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2022 was host to many video game announcements, but one of the most surprising ones was the reveal of aCastlevania-themed DLC forDead Cells, Motion Twin’s indieMetroidvaniaroguelike. The title was originally released in 2018 for PC and consoles, and in the years since has made its way to mobile devices with multiple paid expansions.

Motion Twin showed off an animated trailer forDead Cells’Return to Castlevania DLCduring the big showcase, which was similar to past DLC trailers' style; however, as the trailer went on, viewers can see some of the iconic characters from theCastlevaniaseries, Richter Belmont and Alucard. No actual gameplay was shown during the trailer, but the developers did put up a blog on Steam that goes into more detail on what fans can expect from the Konami collaboration.

First and foremost, the DLC is going to cost players $9.99 when it launches in Q1 of 2023. Q1 is pretty much from January to the end of March, so fans should expect a final release date very soon. The new content does cost a little bit more than previous DLC packs, but Motion Twin explains in the post that the new pricing “reflects the fact that the scope of this DLC is quite a lot bigger than previous DLCs… as well as the inclusion of the Castlevania IP.”

It appears thatDead Cellsplayers won’t actually be playing as Alucard or Richter during the DLC, but there will be 20 outfits to unlock featuring designs for Alucard, Richter, Simon, Mario Renard, Trevor, and even Dracula. Plus, there will be two new biomes, all themed around Dracula’s Castle, givingDead Cellsa totalCastlevaniamakeover.

Players can expect a lot of weapons familiar to theCastlevaniafranchise, like the Throwing Axe and Holy Water, and there will beCastlevania-themed enemies to fight against too. It’s also worth noting thatDead Cellsplayers will be able to hear over 60 tracks from theCastlevaniauniverse.

With the NetflixCastlevaniaseries seeing critical acclaim since its start in 2017 and theGod of War Ragnarok director wanting to make a game in the franchiseone day, it may appear that the Konami series is on its way to becoming popular once again. After the newDead CellsDLC comes out, it would be interesting to see if interest in theCastlevaniaIP increases; until then, fans will just need to wait and keepmaking Alucard inElden Ring’scharacter creator.

Dead Cellsis available on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. TheCastlevaniaDLC will launch in early 2023.
