Destinymay be known for its deep lore, but, with so much backstory, there are still a lot of things that make no sense. The cryptic group simply known as The Nine is no exception to this nonsense. Despite being present since the very beginning of theDestinyfranchise, still very little is known about the mysterious group.

With their motives and power only coming to light inDestiny 2over the last few years, Bungie has a lot of explaining to do before any of the lore, backstory, and cutscenes are going to start to make sense.

10Why Send Xur?

There are few individuals that are as welcomed and revered as Xur, the weekly exotic weapons salesman. To many people’s surprise, however, they have no one else to thank but The Nine themselves for this much-beloved vendor.

This begs the question, why would The Nine send a weekly representative with some of the best gear in the game to sell to the Guardians? Thanks to Season of The Drifter and the many cutscenes that came with the “Invitation of the Nine” missions, it is obvious The Nine’s motives are not so black-and-white as it seems. Perhaps The Nine are preparing us for war through Xur, or maybe they are simply tempting us with gifts? One thing is for sure, however: their motives are more than what they appear when it comes to Xur.

9Why Have The Drifter Start Gambit?

Although we had a full season of content dedicated to the Drifter and his connection to The Nine, we were left with more questions than answers by the end. For example, why give The Drifter the haul that is attached at the back of his ship, or why have The Drifter start Gambit in the first place?

With a whole game mode dedicated to gathering motes of light and using them against fellow Guardians, there is more going on inside the mode than meets the eye. With how many experiments and tricks The Nine have up their sleeve, Gambit seems to favor The Nine more than the players may initially think.

8What Was The Purpose Of The Trails Of The Nine?

Balancing issues, multiplayer changes, and nostalgia for Trails of Orsis aside, there is no doubt that Bungie was going somewhere with Trails of the Nine. Sadly, this question may never be answered now that Trails of Orsis was reintroduced in Season of the Worthy.

Although we may not visit the Third Spire ever again, The Nine has a lot of explaining to do before Guardians will let them off the hook for mysteriously inviting them to a surreal location known as the Unknown Space. Now that Destiny 3 is no longer in the cards, Bungie has plenty of opportunities to flush out this enigmatic group further.

7Why Try To Kill The Drifter?

Throughout Season of the Drifter, we discovered that it was Orin The Emissary of The Nine who was the first to make contact with the Drifter and give him his infamous ship the Derelict. Afterward, throughout more cutscenes introduced with the invitation of The Nine questline, we learn that The Drifter has made contact with The Nine before and was potentially almost killed by them who tried overheat his brain.

Despite having an arrangement, this action shows that The Nine are not above violence, and it depicts the notion even further that even The Nine’s allies are expendable when it comes to achieving their overall goal, whatever that may be.

6Why Let Us Explore The Unknown Space?

The Nine had our interest at the Third Spire, but, after entering the Reckoning, The Nine sure has Guardians' attention when it comes to the mysterious location known as the Unknown Space. By far the most bizarre location inDestiny, it’s astonishing that The Nine would even let Guardians explore their domain. That is assuming that The Nine calls the Unknown Space their home.

However, even if The Nine don’t call the space their home, why go through all the trouble of creating an abstract void for Guardians to play around with in the first place?

One big-bad that was at the center of one of its DLC’s was Skolas, featured inDestiny’sHouse of Wolves add-on. A notable enemy to both the Awoken and the Guardians of the tower, it makes very little sense why The Nine would release such a powerful foe from his imprisonment.

4Who Are The Nine?

Although The Nine has affected a lot of the events inDestinyeither directly or indirectly, there is still known about who The Nine even are. Back whenDestinystill featured grimoire cards, there was one card that even discussed the possible identities of The Nine. The card indicates that The Nine could be anywhere from pre-collapse human survivors to the possibility of Nine Guardian-less ghosts, or potentially being aspects of the Darkness themself.

3What Are Their Motives?

Although Xur, an Agent of the Nine, may be welcomed weekly with exotic trinkets and goods that would make any gamer smile with glee, players should remember that it was The Nine’s actions that released Skolas, the antagonist of the originalDestiny’sHouse of Wolves DLC, from his imprisonment.

With no allegiance to anyone but themselves, The Nine true motives are still are cryptic and still puzzle Guardians to this very day.

2If They Rely On The Survival of The Planets, Then Why Destroy Us?

Although little is known about The Nine, one thing that is constant within the lore is their reliance onthe survival of the planets—and not just one planet, but all planets, which is why agents like Xur and The Emissary need to show special care and attention to solar systems and their inhabitants. Despite their reliance on the survival of the planets, their actions speak otherwise, especially when it comes to helping enemies of the Guardians, to whom The Nine are no strangers.

1Why Only Send Xur To Visit Guardians?

After Season of the Drifter, it’s safe to say that The Nine’s motives aren’t entirely black and white. However, despite their motives, why only help Guardians? Although it was suggested that The Nine released Skolas as a sort of test for Guardian’s, who’s to say that it wasn’t because they were trying to help The Fallen in the first place? If they are only looking out for themselves, wouldn’t it make sense to help other enemy races out, as well?
