Devil May Cry 5fans who aren’t making the jump to next-gen hardware may have felt they lost access to the upcomingDevil May Cry 5: Special Edition’s major draw: the ability to play as Vergil, announced during thePS5 Showcase event this month. Fortunately, Capcom had some good news to share at Tokyo Game Show 2020.
Throughout theDevil May Cryseries, Dante’s enigmatic brother Vergil has served as a rival to the games' primary protagonists, and occasionally features as an unlockable character with a unique move set. The conspicuous absence of a playable role inDMC5left many fans scratching their heads, but the recently announcedDMC5: Special Editionrevealed players would be able to step into his boots after all.

At TGS Live 2020,DMC5director Hideaki Itsuno and producer Matt Walker announced that Vergil will also be arriving on current-gen consoles as paid DLC.Vergil has surprisingly deep loreand a technical playstyle that has earned him legions of fans. It is unclear whether the ability to play as Vergil inDMC5will feature new narrative content or be a purely mechanical exercise. A price and release date for the DLC have yet to be announced, and little is known about Vergil’s new move-set, save for the fact that he is still favoring his signature katana.
Many ofSpecial Edition’s other technical and graphical features, like Turbo Mode and an increased difficulty option that spawns more enemies, will not be available for current-generation consoles, as their hardware doesn’t have the power to support them. Demon hunters playing onPC will also not receive any of theSpecial Edition’s extra content or features. Capcom’s decision is a perplexing one given the relative success of theDMC5’s PC release.
It has been a big year for Dante and company. In addition to the launch ofDevil May Cry 3: Special Editionfor Nintendo Switch with some enhanced features, Dante appeared in the popular mobile gamePuzzle & Dragons,and Capcom recently revealed that theShin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturneremaster will receive Dante as paid DLC.
There have also beenhints suggesting Dante may appear inSuper Smash Bros.Ultimateas a DLC fighter. The crossover would be welcome, especially given the demon hunter’s penchant for appearing in other game universes has become something of a meme online.
