As week four of the expected six-week-long trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is underway, many people have come forward with their input. The entire trial is being live-streamed, making it highly accessible. Just as the everyday person has something to say on social media, celebrities are having their say too. Sometimes though, this doesn’t work in their favor.
Actress Drew Barrymore was one of those who made a public statement on the case, despite her lack of connection to either party involved. Originally, she called the trial “a seven-layer dip of insanity” on her daytime talk show,The Drew Barrymore Show. She went on to seemingly criticize how public the trial is and how open the parties are with this very personal information. However, fans didn’t find what she said appealing and instead were offended by her making light of the situation.

To make things right, Barrymore took to her Instagram page andmade a public video apology. In the video, she apologizes for making statements that offended or hurt people and made light of a serious situation. She says that all she wants is to be a good person and that she looks at this criticism as a teachable moment in how to conduct herself going forward. Barrymore also thanks those who called her out, saying they were able to teach her and help her grow.
While the case between Depp and Heard is technically one of defamation, the heart of the matter revolves around domestic violence.Heard initially claimed that Depphad physically abused her in their marriage, however, in the years that followed, the narrative that the public believes has become more divided on what actually happened. As this is such a serious subject, fans don’t want to see or hear it being made light of.
It was Depp’s choice to file the claim and to live-stream the trial. His case revolves around aWashington Postop-ed that Heard had written detailing her experience coming forward as someone in the public eye who was a domestic violence survivor. He claims that this caused him damages with regard to his career and reputation, and has taken the chance with his testimony to try and prove he in fact was the victim and that she lied. So far, the public has been very much on his side, but the trial still has at least two weeks left to go andHeard has yet to plead her caseor give a testimony.
Barrymore is not the only one to make light of this situation. Throughout the trial, there have been several bizarre occurrences and behaviors from both sides, though mostly by Heard and her lawyers. They’ve becomethe subject of many memesand compilations, with a lot of the public finding things about this case humorous.
