Resident Evil 3was revealed during December’s State of Play broadcast and with it came a somewhat surprising amount of information. The game’s release date, pre-order bonuses, editions, and gameplay were all revealed in an impressively short amount of time. As withResident Evil 2,the newly announced remake ofResident Evil 3is being built on Capcom’s RE Engine which has also poweredDevil May Cry 5andResident Evil 7: Biohazard.
The news surroundingResident Evil 3is not all too shocking though as Capcom has been releasing greatly successful titles, both critically and commercially, every year since around the start of the PS4 and Xbox One generation. Capcom’s resurgence as a great developer in the minds of fans only started in the past few years. Before then, shady business practices and generally unpopular development choices made for a difficult relationship between Capcom and its fans.

In 2015, Capcom put out an HD port ofResident Evilon those respective platforms. Though it is not a remake from the ground up, that game reignited a desire amongResident Evilfans for Capcom to finally produce some remakes of the beloved franchise. Later that year, Capcom randomly announced that it would start production on a remake ofResident Evil 2.It seemed like Capcom was going to have something special in a couple of years. From 2018 to now, Capcom has made great successes inMonster Hunter World,the remake ofResident Evil 2,andDevil May Cry 5among others, selling through several million units each.
Gameplay
This new game will feature the same style of over-the-shoulder camera that wasfeatured in theResident Evil 2remake(and was made famous for the series inResident Evil 4). Zombies ostensibly have the same style of AI mechanics that was found in the previous game, as they lunge at the player creating an engage-or-dodge situation. There is a brief shot where Jill Valentine shoves an attacking zombie off of her, a staple mechanic of the series, and shooting is also largely the same with the exception of the subtle differences that can be found between the styles of Jill, Leon Kennedy, or Claire Redfield.
Though there were no shots of the inventory system (the gameplay from the trailer itself was brief), one can assume that a more refined version of the previous system will be implemented.
According to Capcom’s producers, every aspect of the graphics or art has been created with gameplay in mind. This is clear in the change in Jill’s outfit from the 1999 version. This remake has her outfitted in attire that would let a person more convincingly maneuver like a police officer in a zombie outbreak. As such, veryResident Evil 3character has had some changes done to them from the original version in some form or another.
Story
Though the reveal trailer was brief, a section of it showed a significant addition to the original story ofResident Evil 3: Nemesis,andthere were a few moments that appeared to be from a cut-scene in the game held in first-person camera. With the exception ofResident Evil 7: Biohazard,first-person camera has not had any significant role in the series.
This cut-scene showed Jill running away from a shadowy Mr. X-like figure before bursting out of the burning building and crashing against a wall. This section presumably shows the events that occurred leading up to the point where Jill became playable in the original title. This is not the only point in the trailer that hints ataspects of the story ofResident Evil 3;several familiar characters appear later in the trailer. Carlos Oliveira also appeared and will play just as significant a role in the story this time around.

Collector’s Edition and Pre-Order Bonuses
Resident Evil 3 Collector’s Editionwas also announced after the reveal of the game. Exclusively available at Gamestop for $179 (in North America), this edition comes with an 11 inch PVC figure of Jill Valentine complete with a Raccoon Police Department stand, similar to Leon’s figure in the Collector’s Edition forResident Evil 2.
It also comes with an art book featuring various concept art and screenshots, a voucher code for the digital soundtrack toResident Evil 3(and the soundtrack to the online mode,Resident Evil Resistance), and a double-sided map poster of Raccoon City. One side is a regular map while the other is the same map with markings and notes made by survivors of the outbreak. All of these items come packaged in a noveltyResident Evilsafe-room item box.
Thepre-order bonus forResident Evil 3that comes with all editions physical or digital is a costume pack featuring alternate outfits for Jill and Carlos inspired by their original 1999 appearances. Additionally, pre-ordering the digital version on PSN comes with a theme for the PS4 system menu. As of yet, the Xbox One version of the game is not available to pre-purchase through Amazon, but is available at Gamestop and Best Buy.
Resident Evil Resistance
A new experience for the series,Resident Evil Resistanceis the online mode that comes featured withResident Evil 3.It will be available to play on the same day as the single-player campaign.Resistanceis a one versus four asymmetrical online multiplayer mode that pits one overpowered player, known as the Mastermind, against four players, known as the survivors, in distress.
The objective of the game is either for the survivors to successfully escape before time runs out or for the Mastermind to stop them. The Mastermind uses multiple cameras through the facility map to keep surveillance on the survivors while utilizing different cards to spawn traps and monsters, such as zombies, zombie dogs, lickers, and even theTyrant itself, Mr. X. The Mastermindcan also control these monsters at certain points.
The survivors will have to utilize various weapons and items while cooperating with each other to survive. There are three main objectives for the survivors to complete in sequence and once they successfully navigate the third area within the time limit, they will have won.
They can use different guns and heal items, but once someone is too injured they will need a teammate to revive them in time from a down state. If they die, they respawn with a time penalty. Each character also has certain specialties, such as healing and hacking, that will aid them in surviving.
Resident Evil 3is scheduled to be released June 09, 2025 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
