As the Minutemen continue to make theirheroic return to the Commonwealththanks to the help ofFallout 4’s protagonist, the Sole Survivor, they decide that to stand against rival factions and the might of the Brotherhood of Steel, they’re going to need bigger guns, and what better gun than a literal artillery barrage? Old Guns provides players with new defensive capabilities for attack inFallout 4, as well as some pretty loot for their hands to claim.

As one of the Minutemen’s main quests, and as an achievement/trophy, it’s important that players learn how to complete Old Guns, as there are a few factors involved in this quest that might deter players, like the pathing of Ronnie Shaw, or the inaccessible door in the Castle Tunnels.

7Complete Taking Independence

In order to first obtain the Old Guns quest, players are going to need to complete Taking Independence, a missionreceived from Preston Garveyonce they have joined the ranks of the Minutemen as their General, and recruited at least four settlements to the Minutemen cause. The quest involves retaking the Castle, a stronghold for the Minutemen and also has them deal with a Mirelurk Queen. Despite the dangers, completing the quest and then waiting three in-game days and tuning into Radio Freedom, talking to Preston Garvey, or even being in the Castle, will see them obtain the Old Guns quest, where their first objective is to speak to the newest arrival of the Castle, the Minutemen veteran, Ronnie Shaw.

6Meet Ronnie Shaw

Within the courtyard of the Castle, players will need to locate Ronnie Shaw. She’s easily found, as she will mainly just patrol inside, holding a laser musket and wearing green army overalls and a black beret. Once introduced, she will tell players of a hidden armory in the west bastion, one that only she knows how to get into. Following Ronnie will lead them to a steel door blockage their passage, and talking to her again, will see her reveal an alternate entrance, a tunnel located in the general’s quarters found at the east corner of the Castle.

Upon reaching the tunnel, players will find that it’s blocked by rubble. The only way to clear it is by entering the workshop and selecting the option to scrap the rubble, which will see players earn 6 concrete to be added to their workshop’s inventory. Once scrapped, it’s very important to stick with Ronnie, as although players can go into the tunnel alone, it will not advance the quest unless Ronnie is inside with them, escorting the players through.

5Explore The Castle Tunnels

The Castle tunnels are pretty expansive and maze-like, and there are a few treasures here, as well as a lot of traps. Players can find all sorts of mines, radiation, and automated turrets that will hinder their progress, but they are easily disabled or destroyed. As for Ronnie, she is essential, so she cannot be killed by a rogue landmine, so simply navigate through and enjoy the loot, where players can find cannonballs, fusion cells, and even a fusion corefor their power armor. The video above details a safe way through these tunnels, and into the fight that awaits them at the end.

4Fight Sarge, Unlock The Security Gate, & Claim Minutemen General Outfit

Navigating through the tunnels, players will find a locked security gate with a sentry bot booting up to defend the room. This sentry bot is known to the Minutemen as Sarge, and this ancient guardian isn’t going to go down without a fight. The easiest way to kill Sarge is to shoot at it and throw grenades whilst it’s in the middle of booting up. When Sarge is on the move, use the brick pillar in the middle of the room as cover, and keep taking shots at it. Be warned, when Sarge’s health is depleted, it will explode, but the damage and radiation aren’t enough to kill players with full health.

With Sarge defeated, Ronnie will make her way to the back of the room where there will be an inaccessible terminal. This is why players need Ronnie, because if she was still in the Castle, unaware of players being down here, then there would simply be no way through, and no way to complete the quest. Once Ronnie remembers the password, the security door opens, and players willfind the corpse of General McGann, whom they can loot for the Minutemen General outfit.

3Access The Armory

Heading out of the tunnel, players will be on the other side of the steel door that locked them out of the armory. Ronnie will hit a button to unlock the area, and players can continue inward to loot the armory, which contains plenty of supplies, such as traps, mines, turrets, ammunition, mods, a fat man,a mini-nuke, and more.

Yet, to continue with the quest, players need to draw their attention to the back of the room, where the schematics for artillery are located. Pick these up, as well as the artillery supplies, and loot the crate to the right which contains smoke grenades, and head out into the Castle. All of the loot found in the armory is for the player to take, so they can feel free to leave it or keep it, as it does not count as stealing in the slightest. It’s also nice to have a settlement that has turrets waiting, although players will have to set them up themselves with power and ammunition.

2Build The Artillery Piece

To advance the quest, players will need to build artillery, found whenaccessing the workbenchin the special section. Players will need the following supplies, which the Castle should already have for them:

This will provide the Castle with an additional 6 defense points, and players will then need to find a Minuteman to assign to it. Players should start the Castle with roughly 5 settlers, so any of them will do. Once a settler has been assigned to operate the artillery, head back to Ronnie, who will explain the artillery and how to do a test fire. If players lack the ingredients necessary, then they can easily make a list and purchase them from vendors in Diamond City, Vault 81, and Bunker Hill. Alternatively, it’s a good idea to look around the Castle and see what items players can scrap.

1Test The Artillery

Players will want to use their Pip-Boy to tune into Radio Freedom, and then head out of the Castle to the test fire area. When Ronnie directs the Sole Survivor, throw an artillery grenade by equipping it within the weapons slot and using the throwables button, thus revealing a blue smoke, indicating the area where the artillery barrage will commence.

The artillery is pretty good and unleashes around 6 explosives from long range, just be careful not to be in the vicinity of these explosives. Once the explosives have finished, head back to Ronnie, who will now act as a vendor for the Castle, where players can purchase supplies from here.

The last objective to complete is to talk to Preston and report the progress of the artillery. Finding Preston in the players’ list of settlements is easy with the quest marked, and players simply need to talk to him once in order to finish the quest, which will grant them Ronnie Shaw as a merchant, and the schematics to build artillery in their settlements. Completing this quest is also essential for continuing on the pathway to have the Minutemen be the main focusing faction of players, so if players want to side with the Minutemen and complete the game on their path, it’s a good idea to stay on top of their quests, just be mindful of the infinite cycle of Preston’s infamous settlement quests.
