Across the entire franchise, from the early days in the late 90s, right up to the modern Bethesda takes,Fallout: New Vegasis one that many fondly recall when talking about the series. WithTodd Howard now confirming thatFallout 5is coming, though probably not for many years, fans will be excited about the chance to step into the shoes of the Vault dweller once more. In the meantime, however, there are ample opportunities to modify the current installments, which can even turn them into horror experiences.
Over on Nexus Mods, as seen by PCGamesN, a number of modders have created a resource that other players can use to turnFallout: New Vegasinto something much creepier. Specifically, the tool allows fans to make their ownThe Backroomsexperience, with the mod featuring the signature yellow wall, ceiling, and floor tiles that many will recognize from the horror game based on the creepypasta. Whether the modders will implement additional assets, such as monsters, remains to be seen. At least for now, players can build their own unsettling corridors.

For those who aren’t aware,The Backroomsis a horror game sensationpopularized by YouTubers such as Markiplier. While there are numerous iterations of it, there is a free version that players can download from Steam. Essentially, each game takes place in a liminal space between worlds, a kind of purgatory. The horror comes from the expansive, dingy yellow corridors that seem to stretch on forever. Add to that the atmospheric sounds and the sensation that something is stalking the player, and it makes for a rather frightening experience. There are also videos on YouTube that have taken the concept to create short horror films.
As far asmods forFalloutgo, this one has the potential to be quite unique. It should be reiterated that this is not a fully realized story forNew Vegasthat fans can just play. It’s a “modders resource” that makes it possible for others to create their ownThe Backroomstype of game. While the post-apocalyptic titles don’t really fit into the horror genre, there are a few scary moments across the wastelands, such as a gang of attacking ghouls, that first run-in with a Deathclaw, and the infamous “Gary” Vault fromFallout 3.
Easily considered by many to be thebestFalloutgame in the whole series,New Vegasstruck a chord with the fan community with its memorable characters and fantastic writing. It’s almost 12 years old at this point, but it’s left a lasting impression on gamers, and this new mod resource will give fans a chance to inject something scary into the world.
Fallout: New Vegasis available now for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
