Elden Ringis set to be one of FromSoftware’s biggest releases when it launches at the end of February.Elden Ringspoilers have struck the weband the game itself has secured 8 awards months before it has even released, with a lot of excitement from fans persisting sinceElden Ring’s official reveal.

George R. R. Martin’s involvement inElden Ringwas not only mentioned alongside its official announcement, but was a chief selling point forElden Ring’s early promotional marketing. Martin is the famous author of theA Song of Ice and Fireseries, which is known more widely as the popular TV seriesGame of Thrones, and as such his involvement inElden Ringexcited fans of his fantasy novels. George R. R. Martin spoke recently in a brief blog post about his involvement in FromSoftware’sElden Ringand how that collaboration came to be. Martin has spoke on his contributions at length beforehand, but this recollection takes a nostalgic look back on his experience and the inspiration that convinced him to take on the project. Martin cites FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki’s “groundbreaking” and “gorgeous” art and, now that further demonstrations and trailers have aired, Martin believesElden Ring"looks incredible."

Martin admits that he never had a significant aptitude toward gaming aside from strategy games such asRailroad TycoonandRomance of the Three Kingdoms. Martin addresses the fact that the gaming industry is just as big if not bigger than the film industry, sharing his admiration for the process it takes tocreate and develop a game such asElden Ring. Rather, Martin was only tasked with offering “a bit of worldbuilding” for a “deep, dark, resonant world,” an area of talent with which Martin has had years of knowledge and expertise.

IfElden Ringwas to become its own dark fantasy franchise à laDark Souls, it is unknown if Martin’s input would be called upon for subsequentElden Ringsequels. Perhaps Martin has already written enough ofElden Ring’s rich history and environmental lore to sustain a number of sequels, as is the token expectation of modern fantasy franchises. Regardless, even ifElden Ringis intended to be a standalone title with the famous author’s contributions singularly focused on the one game, fans can be excited to see howMartin has establishedElden Ring’s worldin the new year.
