Ghost Recon Frontlineis Ubisoft’s up and coming battle royale rendition of the popularGhost Reconfranchise, currently undergoing its playtesting phase. Despite the fact thatFrontlineis in its closed beta phase, one player has decided to capture some footage and upload it online.

Specifically, the leaked footage ofGhost Recon Frontlinefeatures about 15 minutes' worth of gameplay, prominently showcasing both weapon customization and a few live clashes with other players. Though the video is “watermarked” with red highlights, as well as being considerably compressed, it seems to be a reasonably good look at what Ubisoft has in store for players later this year.

While the initial announcement ofGhost Recon Frontlinewas met with substantial criticism, Ubisoft’s next foray into the battle royale niche may yet stand on its own two legs after all. As per the leaked footage,Frontlineis going for fast engagements with a low time to kill - especially compared to other battle royale games - and an impressive array of weapon customization options. Though, it’s worth pointing out that most of the assets shown in the leaked footage (weapons, attachments, etc.) will be very familiar toGhost Recon Breakpointplayers in the first place.

From what Ubisoft has revealed so far,Ghost Recon Frontlineis an objective-based game. Unlike most battle royale offerings on the market,Frontlineseems to be looking to deliver a more thoughtful and tactical approach to this tried-and-true gameplay formula, which is plainly visible from the leaked video. Players are tasked with capturing and controlling dedicated zones, with less of a focus on sheer surviving.

Curiously, whereas almost every other battle royale on the market makes a big deal out of looting and itemization, this may not necessarily be the case withGhost Recon Frontline. Despite the initialbacklash that stemmed fromFrontline’s announcement, the game seems to behave more like a regular large-scale multiplayer title in practice. Players can kit out their gear and save loadouts before entering a match, and kills don’t seem to drop anything particularly noteworthy.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the leaked footage showcases an alternative game mode. Ubisoft did announce thatFrontlinewill keep evolvingthroughout its lifetime, so it wouldn’t be too out of place for the game’s early playtesting phases to feature different gameplay loops than the ones that will be present at the launch.

Ghost Recon Frontlineis set to launch in 2022, and it’s going to be playable on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series platforms.
