What makesThe Lord of the Ringsmovie trilogy so popular? Other than its amazing story and characters created by J. R. R. Tolkien, the movie trilogy is so well loved for a multitude of reasons, including its breathtaking film score composed by Howard Shore. Howard Shore composed the music for all six films inThe Lord of the RingsandThe Hobbitfranchises, directed by Peter Jackson.

Though the movies—especially those inThe Lord of the Ringstrilogy—were perfectly cast, no cast members from the film franchise will make an appearance in theAmazonseries (so far) nor will Peter Jackson be involved in the production of the still unnamed series that will be based on stories from Tolkien’s Middle Earth, prior to the events ofThe Lord of the Rings. Amazon’sLord of the Ringsseries will be the most expensive show in history with a reported budget of $465 million for the first season alone. And maybe those early reports of the series being doomed to fail were too quick to judge, as it looks like Amazon’s money is being put to good use.

Deadline says they had inside information the three-time Oscar-winning composer, Howard Shore, “is in talks to compose the music for the TV series.” All three of Howard Shore’s Oscars were won for his work onThe Lord of the Ringstrilogy. But some of his other work includes the original scores for movies likeThe Twilight Saga, Silence of the Lambs, Hugo, King Kong(another Peter Jackson film),Panic Room, andThe Aviator. For fans who have been eagerly waitingfor Amazon to release the first season, the highly anticipated Amazon series will premiere in September of 2022.

Amazon has announced a few things that have made some fans a little apprehensive about whether theLord of the Ringsseries will just be anotherGame of Thrones, or whether it will be made with care and attention to detail. Though fans will have to wait and see for themselvesif the show is any good or not, if nothing has got their attention about the series yet, maybe Howard Shore joining the project might give fans a reason to watch. The first season (which has finally finished principal photography) was filmed entirely in New Zealand, which happens to be where all sixLord of the RingsandHobbitmovies were filmed. But for the first time ever, the Amazon series will move Middle Earth out of New Zealand and into the United Kingdom for its second season.

ForThe Lord of the Ringssuper fans who love the movie trilogy, some of the news like the addition of nude actorsor switch from New Zealand to the United Kingdom may have upset them enough to not watch. Hopefully, this news about Howard Shore possibly composing the music for the Amazon series will bring those fans back on board and get them excited about finally watching the series.

The Lord of the Ringswill premiere Jul 31, 2025, on Amazon Prime.
