Kingdom Hearts 3’s ReMind DLC is available now on PS4 and will be coming to Xbox in February. But fans have already devoured the new content and are speculating about what it means. One thing all fans can agree on, though, is that Nomura is up to his usual crazy hijinx. The ending ofKingdom Hearts 3: ReMindhas some loose connections toFinal Fantasy, or specifically theFinal Fantasy 15precursorFinal Fantasy 13 Versus. It’s not an overt reference, but knowing fans will agree it’s an undeniable connection.
Here’s how the ending of thenew ReMind DLCworks out, which is obviously full of bigspoilersfor the new content. ReMind has two different endings, which theKingdom Heartscommunity has dubbed the “Good” and “Bad” endings. To get the good ending, players have to complete the DLC’s story, fight 13 challenging bosses, and then defeat a secret boss. This secret boss, for those familiar withKingdom Hearts 3’s story, is named Yoroza. He’s a character from a video game, a JRPG that has been previously described as similar toFinal Fantasy 15.

In this secret “Good” ending, Yoroza fades away. It’s a veryKingdom Heartsway to go out. However, after fading out, Yoroza comes back. TheJRPG protagonistawakens in a car, jarred awake by something the driver says. What’s important isn’t the context of the scene, as silly as that may seem. Rather, what’s important is that this scene is a recreation of part of a trailer forFinal Fantasy Versus 13. The scenes are near identical, though the new scene fromKingdom Hearts 3has been entirely remade. It just uses the original trailer as a guideline.
Final Fantasy Versus 13was a sequel/side-story originally planned to spin off ofFinal Fantasy 13.Final Fantasy Versus 13was eventually turned intoFinal Fantasy 15, partly due to its expansion of scope and partly due to it being delayed to a point where it didn’t make sense to try and connect it toFinal Fantasy 13anymore. The trailer in question featured a character that would becomeFinal Fantasy 15’s protagonist, Noctis. Noctis, like Yoroza, wakes up in a car at his driver’s prompting. One interesting detail left out ofKingdom Hearts 3is a line of text shown before the scene begins reading, “This is a fantasy based on reality.”
Exactly what it’s all supposed to mean is anyone’s best guess. Some fans assume it to mean that there’s a directconnection betweenKingdom HeartsandFinal Fantasy 15. Others think it’s more of a symbolic connection referring toKingdom Heartscreator Tetsuya Nomura’s development of both games. Others yet think it’s just nonsense, just like they consider the rest ofKingdom Hearts 3. Whatever the purpose of the scene, it’s inarguable that it’s intentionally obtuse. Sometimes it’s best to take things as they are without overthinking them.
