Summary

The long-awaited sixth season ofOverwatch 2has finally debuted, which includes PvE story missions, a new support hero, and another core game mode called Flashpoint. The latest mode featuresNew Junk City and Suravasa, two of the largest maps to ever exist in the hero shooter. While it can be a bit confusing for some players to figure out where to go, or where the objective is, Flashpoint has been overall well-received by the community.

Some had doubts as to how well Flashpoint would work in a game likeOverwatch 2because of its three capture points that unlock randomly. However, the standard mode won’t be added to Competitive Play until around August 24, two weeks after Season 6 launched. While it’s been exciting to play a new mode, Flashpoint could see a few more maps in the future that could help with its replay value.

Gothenburg - Ironclad Workshop

Gothenburg

Gothenburg was originally revealed as an Assault map, or 2CP, at BlizzCon 2019. SinceOverwatch 2opted to do away with the controversial game mode, Gothenburg has likely been receiving some reworks. Interestingly,Torbjorn’s workshop and family can be foundat this location, as seen in Season 6’s Story Missions. While the Ironclad mission sees a payload at one point, this doesn’t mean Gothenburg couldn’t revert to its Assault version with an additional third capture point to match other Flashpoint maps.

Arequipa

Arequipa is a potentially unreleased map that could be modeled after the former capital of Peru. It’s revealed inIllari’s tragic backstorythat she’s Peruvian, which makes Arequipa a perfect candidate as the next themed map to make its way to the game. A 2016Overwatchblog post may have already teased the existence of such a map with three locations listed in an image: Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, and Arequipa. Since Push and Flashpoint have so few maps in the game, Illari’s homeland could be a perfect choice for either of the two.

Hanamura

Hanamura was one of the most aesthetically pleasing maps in theOverwatchfranchise with its cherry blossoms and ties to the Shimada clan. As such, some fans were disappointed when it was taken away with the other Assault maps inOverwatch 2. Still,Hanamura had glitches inOverwatchand issues related to the balancing aspect of two capture points and the proximity of defender spawns. If the map could find a way to return as a Flashpoint location, there are certainly those in the community that would welcome its return.

Horizon Lunar Colony

Horizon Lunar Colony was so heavily debated in the firstOverwatchthat it was initially removed from ranked gameplay and eventually from the game altogether. Although it was a divisive map,Overwatch 2Season 4’s Starwatch: Galactic Rescue eventoffered a solution that could save it: four capture points. Perhaps the moon map would fare better with three points and some map expansion. It would make more sense to turn Horizon Lunar Colony into a Flashpoint map than any other game mode at the moment due to its last appearance.

At the momentOverwatch 2doesn’t appear to be focusing on new maps, seeing as Push only has three and Flashpoint has two. Beyond Season 6, it’s likely the developers will try to add more maps to the shooter since repetitiveness can quickly turn into disinterest from the player base. While it has not been confirmed if any of the aforementioned maps are being redesigned for Flashpoint, there’s a good chance that players will get to see them again in some form or another.
