Reddit user Dragonic_Overlord recently made a post about the Scorpion poison sequence in thePS4 Spider-Mansubreddit. At this point in the story, Scorpion and the rest ofthe Sinister Sixescaped the supermax prison called the Raft and were wrecking havoc in New York under Doctor Octopus' orders. During one mission, Spider-Man is searching for Scorpion, and he gets ambushed by the supervillain who cuts him with his cybernetic suit’s poisonous tail and leaves Spider-Man to suffer from its effects leading to the poison sequences in the game.

During these sequences, Peter encounters a hallucinogenic version ofthe supervillain Doctor Octopusas his civilian self Otto Octavius, who is Peter Parker’s mentor and role model in the game’s story. In these sequences, Peter talks to this hallucinatory version of Octavius as he tries to make an antidote for Scorpion’s poison. The Reddit user asks if the responses and insults from the hallucinatory Octavius are actually reflections of Peter’s own doubts and insecurities he’s feeling during the game’s story.

A prominent example the user highlights is when Octavius calls Peter a failure at life, love, and career. This line is referring to the fact that Peter had broken up with Mary Jane earlier in the story’s history prior to them meeting in the present, his scientific career was put on hold, and how he can’t financially support himself. The reception to the post was mainly civil with most commenters pointing out how the hallucinations helped explore Peter’s inner turmoil over himself and Otto Octavius becoming a supervillain. There are even more moments like this one that gamers can find throughoutMarvel’s Spider-Manthat explore the humanity of Peter Parker as a young man and as a superhero.
