Created by a formerDestiny 2writer and previous stunt performer for 2018’sGod of War,Midnight Fight Expresspromises a brutal, fast combat experience with plenty of close-quarters battles. The game was initially unveiled back at Gamescom 2021, and now, a year later, it is gearing up for release. From its initial showcase and the footage that has been shown since, some havecomparedMidnight Fight ExpresstoHotlineMiami, but from a new trailer, it is clear that the two games certainly have their differences.
The similarities betweenMidnight Fight ExpressandHotline Miamiare clear to see for fans of the latter, especially given the top-down perspective ofMidnight Fight Expressand the newer game’s use of unique masks in its customization. However, as shown in its new, three-minute trailer,Midnight Fight Expresshas a much morein-depth combat system thanHotline Miami, which would only allow for simple fights that either ended in the masked protagonist killing an enemy in one hit or with the player frantically hitting the reset button to try again.

Midnight Fight Expresspromises more detailed fights, with combat that looks moresimilar toSifuthan it does toHotline Miami, with combo attacks that make the player look like they’re in a Jason Statham-esque action movie, fighting off multiple foes at once. These fights can be enhanced by the skills inMidnight Fight Express, which will unlock new moves and upgrade the playable character. Without any upgrades, there are still some interesting mechanics, such as the ability to counter an opponent, similarly to the moves seen in theBatman: Arkhamgames.
Also, there’s the Focus mechanic, which allows players to slow down time to decide which enemy they want to go after next. Similar mechanics have been seen inRed Dead Redemption 2’sDeadeyeand other titles, but just because something has been used before doesn’t mean it won’t see great success inMidnight Fight Express. While the upcoming game has drawn a lot of comparisons with other titles since it was first announced, it is also clear that the combination of similar mechanics and options are being used to create a unique brawler.
It seems thatMidnight Fight Expressmay revel in these comparisons, and it has even referenced other video games in its promotional material. Back when the reveal trailer first launched in 2021,Midnight Fight Expressincluded a reference toCall of Duty’sinfamous No Russian mission. It is likely that the game will be full of other references, as well as some tight and exciting combat when it launches.
Midnight Fight Expressis coming to PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on August 23.
