While it’s not one of the biggest franchises from Nintendo, theEarthboundseries, orMotherin Japan, is certainly one of the most beloved. It’s a franchise that has plenty of charm and characters that also tackles some dark subjects from time to time. While the games are still beloved, they have been quite hard to play officially, especially in regard toMother 3. Despite its acclaim, this third entry in theMotherseries hasnever received an official localization, remaining exclusive to Japan.

While the game has become infamous for never getting an official English release, there have been plenty offan-made translations ofMother 3that have helped introduce newer gamers to this classic JRPG. It’s no surprise that a niche game like this ended up generating a large cult following, but it is odd that this audience has yet to get an English release. Despite this, over 15 years later, fans are still pushing Nintendo to bring this beloved game over to the West in an official capacity. This same hope has been shared by Shinichi Kameoka, a producer onMother 3.

In an interview with Nintendo Everything, Kameoka was asked about his time working on the series, as well as any hopes he has aboutMother 3. He explained that, much like other fans, he’d also love to seeMother 3get re-releasedin both the US and European regions. “As a lover of games, I will continue to wait forMother 3’s worldwide release,” Kameoka stated.

Other questions were asked regardingMother 3, including any fond memories while working on the game. One of these memories sees the producer sharing how the series creator, Shigesato Itoi, helped rewrite all the placeholder text that was put there by the staff. He cited that Itoi had changed the atmosphere of the game with his writing, and it was “eye-opening” to the developers.

This desire for a re-release ofMother 3comes hot off the heels of a recent Nintendo Direct, which not only confirmed remasters of cult classic JRPGS likeChrono Cross, but also thesurprising re-release ofEarthboundandEarthbound Beginningson the Nintendo Switch Online service. While both of theseEarthboundgames were re-released on the Wii U, this Switch release lets the games be available on a much more popular console. This allows even more players to get a chance to experience what made the series so beloved. Some fans are hoping that ifEarthboundandEarthbound Beginningsare successful on Nintendo Switch Online, thenMother 3can follow suit and be re-released and localized on the Switch too.
