Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist ofOne Pieceand the man who aims to become the Pirate King. Before Luffy started his adventure in the Great Pirate Era, it was Gol D. Roger who was declared as the Pirate King by the world for being the first man to circumnavigate the entire globe and reach the last island, Laugh Tale.

Roger made history with the Roger Pirates and eventually turned himself in to start the Great Pirate Era. Interestingly, he and his successor, Luffy, share quite a lot of similarities.

8Both From The East Blue

The seas of theOne Pieceworld are into four parts, known as the Four Blues, with a belt of oceans running across them, called the Grand Line. Out of the Four Blues, the East Blue is known to be the weakest sea.

Surprisingly, Gol D. Roger was born in the East Blue, specifically, Loguetown, where he was also executed. While Luffy’s exact birthplace isn’t known, it was somewhere in the East Blue. Luffy was raised on Mt. Corvo by Dadan and her bandit family, along with Ace and Sabo.

7Members of the D Clan

There are some people in theOne Pieceworld who carrythe mysterious initial “D.“in their names. The first person to be introduced with this name was none other than Luffy himself. Soon, characters like Roger were known to have the same initial, as did Luffy’s family.

6The Straw Hat

One of Luffy’s biggest treasures is the Straw Hat that he received fromthe pirate, Red-haired Shanks. Luffy and Shanks share quite a wonderful bond and will eventually meet in the New World when Luffy becomes a Great Pirate.

What’s interesting is that the Straw Hat doesn’t belong to Shanks either. In fact, it was given to him by none other than Gol D. Roger, his former captain, when he was an apprentice on Roger’s ship, the Oro Jackson. Through the hat, Luffy and Roger have always been connected to each other.

5Chase Freedom

Most pirates in theOne Pieceworld, especially the ones in the Great Pirate Era, set out to sea to become the Pirate King. To do this, ruling the New World is considered to be essential. However, Luffy is quite different. According to what he said to Rayleigh, he doesn’t want to rule anything.

He believes the freest man on the ocean is the one who will become the Pirate King. This mentality issomething he shares with Gol D. Roger, who said the same words to Golden Lion Shiki when the two clashed in the Battle of Edd War.

4Seek Adventure

A big part of Luffy’s personality is his love for adventure. In the New World, Luffy often decides what the crew’s next adventure will be based on how difficult the path is. Luffy loves adventure, and it is one of the many reasons he is a pirate.

Roger, the Pirate King, was quite similar to Luffy in this regard. Fans saw his journey with Oden during the Wano Country arc, and he ended up being a lover of adventure as well. His goofy behavior on various islands also came as a pleasant surprise to the fans.

3The Same Dream

Roger and Luffy share the exact same dream, and it is something other than becoming the Pirate King. In fact, Roger never dreamed of becoming the Pirate King. He was given this name by the world after hecompleted the circumnavigation of the globe. When Roger sat next to Whitebeard and Oden, he announced his real dream, and both of them were shocked.

According to Whitebeard, the dream in itself was very childish. Oda drew this as a parallel to Luffy sharing his true dream with Sabo and Ace when they were kids. Yamato confirmed that the Pirate King once said the same words as Luffy.

2The Voice Of All Things

The Voice of All Things is a special ability that very few people in the world ofOne Piecepossess. As the name suggests, this power allows people to hear the voices of everything in existence, including the inanimate objects. Even the voices of the Poneglyphs, which are giant stones, can be heard using this ability.

Luffy could also make his voice heard by using this ability, however, the exact way this power works is unknown. Gol D. Roger used this power to locate the Poneglyph on Skypiea. On the way to Fishman Island, he once again displayed this ability.

1All Haki Types

While having all the types of Haki isn’t all that uncommon, it is a set of abilities that Roger and Luffy share. Luffy was taught how to use the three Haki types by none other than Silvers Rayleigh, the former right-hand man of Gol D. Roger.

Roger also had access to all the Haki types. In fact, hedidn’t have any Devil Fruit powerand was reliant completely on Haki. Interestingly, both Luffy and Roger have access to advanced levels of Armament and Conqueror’s Haki.
