These past few years have seen both Sony and Microsoft acquire a number of game studios to create exclusive content for their respective consoles. For Sony, this has mainly consisted of officially adding studios it’s worked closely with to the PlayStation Studios umbrella, withReturnaldeveloper Housemarque andRatchet & Clankstudio Insomniac Gamesjoining Sony recently. Now Sony has acquired yet another studio for its roster in the form ofBluepoint Games, the developer behind the critically-acclaimedDemon’s Soulsremake.

Months ago, PlayStation actually jumped the gun on theBluepoint Games acquisition announcement, prematurely revealing it on social media before pulling those posts down. Now it’s official, as Sony has formally acquired Bluepoint Games. And not only that, but it’s been confirmed that Bluepoint Games' next title is an original project, its first completely original game since it released 2006’sBlast Masterfor the PS3.

Over the years, Bluepoint Games has developed a reputation for making high quality video game remakes and remasters. It got started with theGod of War Collectionin 2009 and worked on subsequent collections forMetal Gear Solid,ICO, andUncharted. In 2018, Bluepoint launched a full-fledgedShadow of the Colossusremake in what was its most ambitious project up to that point, which was then followed by the celebrated PS5 launch title,Demon’s Souls.

Rumors have been swirling that Bluepoint’s next game is aMetal Gear Solidremake, but it appears as though those rumors weren’t true. Unless Bluepoint is swerving fans about its next project, its next game is going to be an original work of some kind. And since completely original works take a bit more time than remakes and remasters, it’s unlikely that the project will be revealed to the public anytime soon.

Bluepoint Gameshas worked almost exclusively with PlayStation over the years, so Sony acquiring the company makes a lot of sense. Considering how impressive Bluepoint’s work has been on the remakes, remasters, and collections it’s released alongside PlayStation, it will definitely be interesting to see what it can do when allowed to work on a completely original project, though again, it will likely be quite some time before anyone is able to see the game.

Sony may not be the only one making a major acquisition soon. There are rumors that aBethesda-level Xbox acquisition announcementis just a matter of time, though nothing official has been announced about that at the time of this writing.
