Pokemon SwordandPokemon Shieldlaunched in late 2019 and were both received very well. ThePokemonbrand comfortably expanded to the Nintendo Switch console with its impressive 3D graphics. However, there remains a number ofPokemonfans who’d love a more classically-inspired iteration of the franchise. While Game Freak has its eyes forward, indie games likeCoromonare more than willing to fill that gap instead.
Coromonthat seeks to emulate what thePokemonfranchiseused to be.Coromonmay even be one of the closest recreations of pastPokemongames that’s ever been made.Coromonstill has all of its own unique are and monsters, though; it’s just immediately recognizable as a retroPokemongame, for better or worse.

A newCoromontrailer should clarify exactly how close toclassicPokemongamesit is. TheCoromontrailer shows the protagonist exploring a unique region with various biomes including grassy woodlands, dry desert areas, rainy towns, and snowy caves. There are also someCoromonbattle sequences shown with named creatures like Bazzer, Dugterra, Lunarpup, and a small adorable bipedal shark called Nibblegar.
Pokemonplayers will find much that’s immediately recognizable, but just different enough to stand apart. Instead ofPokemonballs, there areCoromonSpinners that look like yoyos that become fidget spinners. The battle music is incredibly familiar, including the battle victory music. It might be seen as going too far, if Game Freak hadn’t moved on to a different visual aesthetic and if fans didn’t really want more of the 2D pixelized style ofPokemongame.
Coromonis tentatively planned for release in 2020 according to the game’s Steam profile, though the lack of a date in the trailer may indicate that its launch is still in the air. According to the game’s official website, it’s being planned for PC as well as Android mobile devices. For those interested in more information,Coromonjust released a demo of the game, in addition to the new trailer. It can be downloaded fromCoromon’s official website.
Coromonis just one example of several titles trying to capitalize on the modern popularity ofPokemon. Other titles includeTemtem, aPokemon-like MMO, andMonster Crown, which is more akin to the originalPokemongames. It’s a good time to be aPokemonfan.
