Game Rant can exclusively reveal that Sun Wukong is the eight playable character for roguelike co-op gameRavenswatch, set to join the roster of playable heroes on November 16. Developer Passtech Games found a great deal of success with itsroguelikeCurse of the Dead Godsin 2021, and it’s looking to take what it learned with that game and expand on it withRavenswatch.
LikeCurse of the Dead Godsbefore it,Ravenswatchis a roguelike action game, but with some key differences. For one,Ravenswatchhas online co-op support for up to four players, whereasCurse of the Dead Godswas a single-player experience. Secondly,Ravenswatch’s roster of playable heroes are made up of recognizable characters from folk tales and legends. These legendary characters have to work together to fight back against an antagonistic force known as the Nightmares. The heroes already available in the game, like Beowulf, The Snow Queen, Aladdin, and Geppetto, will soon be joined by one of the most recognizable characters in all of Chinese literature: Sun Wukong, akathe Monkey King fromJourney to the West.
Sun Wukong will stand out from otherRavenswatchheroesthanks to his ability to swap between attack and defense stances. This will include a fan-requested parrying mechanic that should be familiar toCurse of the Dead Godsfans. IfRavenswatchplayers manage to pull off a perfect parry with Sun Wukong, they can parry again without worrying about a cooldown. Sun Wukong’s agility, transfigurations, and clones will also make him a standout addition to theRavenswatchroster when he joins the lineup on November 16.
Sun Wukong’s introduction toRavenswatchwill actually see the famous character nerfed. “We usually need to invent powers to complete the hero’s skill set, but we had to do the opposite for this one and reduce the abilities of the Monkey King demi-god to bring him to the desired level,” explained Passtech Games art director Valentin André-Terramorsi. “Our Sun Wukong is aging and has lost some of his powers with the arrival of the Nightmares. That is the motivation behindRavenswatch: bringing stories from different folklores together in a modern fantasy world.”

Sun Wukong is one of literature’s most recognizable characters, having had a profound impact on popular culture. Beyond the countless adaptations and re-interpretations ofJourney to the Westitself, the Monkey King may be best known to gamers as the inspiration behindDragon Ball’s Son Goku. At the time of this writing,Ravenswatchis only available on PC through early access, but its full release is planned for 2024.
