A new numberedBorderlandsgame is almost assuredly in the works. After thesales success ofBorderlands 3, developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games is very likely working hard behind the scenes on another entry into the first-person looter shooter. And now–from a rather unlikely place–it may be that some development information forBorderlands 4has been leaked.
Over the years there have been some off-the-wall leaks, including Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flagbeing exposed on an airplane. In line with that story is a recent account of someone apparently finding out that a software programmer was studying caves in Branson, Missouri for designs onBorderlands 4. The leak should be taken with a massive grain of salt. But if true, it would go down as one of thefunniest video game leaksin recent memory.

According to a recent episode of the Game Scoop! podcast, a listener named Ethan decided to write into the show to share his very intriguing story. Ethan lives in Pennsylvania but was visiting Missouri for work back in March of 2021. In doing so, he and some co-workers decided to travel to a cave and the tour guide recounted a story from the previous week in which they had encountered a gentleman who claimed he was a software programmer for a video game. After some prodding, the gentleman spilled the beans and said he was “researching caves so that he could work on designs forBorderlands 4.” If true, this would be one of the first pieces of information that would confirm the existence of the game.
The entire story reads as a bit of a he-said-she-said tall tale, so it should certainly be considered nothing more than a rumor at this point. That being said, many programmers and designers travel to locations to get an idea of what real-life scenes look like and get a feel for what they want to put in-game, so it would not be a big surprise. Another thought is that the programmer was actually talking aboutTiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which is coming in 2022. While the game is notBorderlands 4, it would have been a more simple way to explain the game to the general public.
Another funny joke that could come out of this story is that this programmer is designing the nextloot cave forBorderlands,as the community will certainly be looking for another endless fountain of loot in the next entry into the series. Whatever the case may be, the story as a whole is interesting and fans will certainly be looking for more concrete details on the game in the future. If anything is announced, perhaps this story can be something to look back on.
Borderlands 4is rumored to be in development.
