Summary

A September 2023Nintendo Directis scheduled for next week, according to a newly surfaced report. Thelast Nintendo Direct happened at the tail end of August, leading some to believe that the Japanese gaming giant might skip its traditional September broadcast this time around.

An established industry insider seemingly dismissed that notion soon thereafter, suggesting thatanother Nintendo Direct could arrive earlier than expected. The fact that the August presentation was primarily dedicated toSuper Mario Bros. Wonderfits that theory, as Nintendo’s September broadcasts historically encompassed a much wider variety of the company’s first-party titles, so its last one was hardly a replacement for such a late summer showcase.

Adding even more credence to that earlier rumor, Portuguese media outlet Universo Nintendo now reports that another Nintendo Direct is happening next week, citing sources familiar with the matter. The exact date of the alleged event remains unclear, with the report merely suggesting it’s to take place during the following working week, September 11 through September 15. Taking this claim at face value, a broadcast scheduled for Monday would likely be confirmed no later than Friday, September 8, as Nintendo traditionally makes such announcements up to a few days in advance and avoids doing so over the weekend.

Then again, Tuesday and Thursday are much likelier slots for this month’s Nintendo Direct, not least because seven of the last ten September presentations from the gaming giant fell on one of those days. The last one that didn’t was the Wednesday one from 2019. And while it remains to be seen whether this particular rumor pans out, a September without a Nintendo Direct would be a major break from precedent; the last timeNintendomissed an opportunity to hold such a broadcast in September was all the way back in 2015.

Should that trend continue, this month’s showcase is likely to feature the remake ofSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which is scheduled to hit the Switch on November 17. Ditto forDetective Pikachu ReturnsandWarioWare: Move It, which are coming to the hybrid console on October 6 and November 3, respectively.Super Mario Bros. Wonderis less of a possibility due to the fact that it was just treated to its own Nintendo Direct last week. Likewise, the first part of The Hidden Treasure of Area ZeroDLC forPokemon Scarlet and Violetmight already be out by the time Nintendo holds its next showcase, as it’s slated to release next Wednesday, September 13.

Up until this week, the notion of a late summer Nintendo Direct would also inspire hope among the fandom that the Japanese gaming giant might finally announce some DLC for its newestZeldagame. However, a senior company official justshared some bad news forTears of the Kingdomfansthat essentially ruled out that possibility.
