Marvel’s Spider-Manis one of thebestSpider-Mangames of all time. By featuring a sprawling open world with smooth web-swinging mechanics, the title became a fan favorite quickly. Its success was enough to spawn a standalone spinoff featuring Miles Morales and a full sequel, which will be out later this year. However, the game also left a very mysterious question unanswered.

The question of who hired the Taskmaster was posed on Reddit by Fantastic_Orchid3037. In the game, the Taskmaster is closely followingSpider-Manto learn more about him. After Spidey completes his challenges and fights him, he eventually tells the web-slinger that he’s chasing him because someone paid him over six figures to do it. “They,” the Taskmaster explains, were interested in hiring Spider-Man, but they needed to test him first. The game ends, however, and Spider-Man never actually receives the job offer or discovers who is behind this scheme.
While Fantastic_Orchid3037 wondered whether some high-profile heroic groups could have been behind the Taskmaster’s mission such as the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, or even the X-Men, most Redditors didn’t seem to agree with them. Most of these good-aligned organizations would not hire a villain to test or even murder Spider-Man, so that does not add up. According to Sweet-Potato-987, however, S.H.I.E.L.D. could have done it, as Nick Fury does not follow the same ethics code as the heroes. There were other fairly good guesses, too. DriverFirm2655, for instance, commented the contractor could probably be Norman Osborn, who is completely obsessed with Spidey and has an ambivalent relationship with the character. Others believed it could have been A.I.M., as the group’s existence was confirmed in the universe, oreven Kraven the Hunter. In any case, the question remains open for now.
Hopefully, players may get a few answers about this mystery in the upcomingMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is one of themost anticipated games in 2023.Spider-Man 2will be a direct sequel and will pit Peter Parker and Miles Morales against enemies such as Kraven the Hunter and Venom, promising more engaging action sequences and open-world exploration, as well as the opportunity to play as both protagonists.
