No one is indispensable at The CW andStargirlhas proven to be no exception after news that the series will be ending once the ongoing third season wraps up next was confirmed by its creator.

Stargirlpremiered on the CW back in 2020 and its cancelation is just one of many across its home network, which already called quits onBatwoman,DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,In the Dark, andRoswell, New Mexico, among others earlier this year, with the impending finale ofThe Flashalso planned in 2023. Despite its faint ties to the Arrowverse and ateasedStargirlcrossover with HBO Max’sTitans, the series being canceled would mark the end of the CW’s DC Comics programming.

News ofStargirl’s confirmed ending was shared by creator Geoff Johns (viaThe Hollywood Reporter) in an official statement. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind,” Johns said, firmly believing this will be the series’ best season yet. Johns thanked both WBTV and The CW for giving him the opportunity, withStargirllead actor Brec Bassinger also expressing her gratefulness for the years she spent playing the role.

Stargirlhad been rumored to be next in line for cancellation at The CW after the network was sold to Nexstar and the company was subject to a wide corporate restructuring all across the board. Throughout its three seasons,Stargirlhas averaged similar audienceratings and score reception to most Arrowverse shows, although it’s now suffered the same fate as much of The CW’s content. As of now,Gotham Knightsis still slated to premiere on the network in 2023, but it would be the sole DC property of the network afterThe Flashwraps up.

The series is currently in the middle of season three, with episode 9 premiering this Wednesday and two more remaining untilStargirlfinalizes its 3-season run on November 16. While changes for The CW were bound to come after the change in ownership,Stargirlis yet another symbol for the network’s lack of direction over the course of the last decade, especially in the handling of the Arrowverse, similar to how DC’s main DCEU has always struggled to keep up with its Marvel peers.

Currently,The Winchestersis one of the most popular showsThe CW offers, with surely more changes to come in terms of programming in the next few months. As for Stargirl, fans of this iteration might hope to see the character revived somewhere down the line in the new DC era spearheaded by James Gunn.

Stargirlcurrently airs on The CW every Wednesday, at 8:00 PM ET.
