Not much is currently known aboutGrand Theft Auto 6,but ifGrand Theft Auto 5’ssales, which passed 100 million units, are any indication of the nature of its sequel thenGrand Theft Auto 6could be the biggest game of the PS5 and Xbox Series X generation. There have been plenty of rumors and supposed leaks as to the release date, setting, and characters of the hotly anticipated title but until Rockstar actually starts to publicly confirm details of the game, all of these rumors are in the end, just rumors. The two biggest rumors come from Reddit and Fireden.
As far as rumors forGrand Theft Auto 6go, some are more credible than others but all must be taken with skepticism. One of the more popular leaks comes from Reddit and it claims that the story forGrand Theft Auto 6will follow a plot inspired by the Netflix seriesNarcos. The game will supposedly follow one male playable main character (a split fromGrand Theft Auto 5’sthree playable protagonists) as he attempts to navigate the drug trade world that runs from Vice City to a fictional version of Brazil.

Besides the classic PS2 setting getting a make-over (much like Los Santos fromGTA San AndreastoGrand Theft Auto 5), a fictional Brazil and a bunch of other cities are reported to be a part of this game. Interestingly, the same leak claims that the game takes place during the 1970s and 1980s, meaning that, if true, Tommy Vercetti fromGrand Theft Auto Vice Cityis alive during this game and could even potentially make an appearance due to the game taking place right where Tommy is.
Other details from the leak include a car that has a storage mechanic similar to the horse inRed Dead Redemption 2.Considering the South American setting, the leak also claims that a significant amount of the story will not be spoken in English.
Leaks have claimed similar things in the past but what all leaks cannot seem to agree on is the setting. The Fireden rumor claims that the game takes place in another updated version ofLiberty Citywith a story that involves drug kingpins building up their empires and the police officers that follow them. More specifically, the game is supposedly going to feature significantly more dialogue thanGrand Theft Auto 5and will have aSims-like drug empire building mechanic to it. The police officers’ story is supposed to be the counterbalance to that, offering a more action-based mission structure that the series is known for.
Other details are scarce, but what is at least officially known ofGrand Theft Auto 6is that it is at least in existence. Rockstar executives have never shied away from the topic in the past and, right after the launch ofGrand Theft Auto 5,have even hinted at multipleGTAcities being connected either in a future game or through some iteration ofGrand Theft Auto Online. Most recently, there have been numbers translated at the game’s release date, and otherGTA Onlinetrailershave suggest three possible locations: Cuba, Vice City, and Colombia.
Developers like Rockstar Games have taken the tradition of game reveals to the utmost extreme and can get away with it because of its fan base.Red Dead Redemption 2was teased for the first time via Rockstar’s Twitter account back in 2016, two years before the game’s official release in the fall of 2018, though it was originally slated to be released a year earlier. AllRockstardid was tweet out its own logo on a red backdrop. The post immediately went viral and ended up on news sites beyond the gaming industry, simply because Rockstar has that level of clout.
Grand Theft Auto 6is bound to be officially teased for the first time in a similar fashion eventually. Rockstar did a similar thing withGrand Theft Auto 5before the game’s first trailer was dropped, but until Rockstar decides to tease its fans once again anytime soon, the world will have to settle for rumors.
