In addition to the originalCritical Rolemembers who are voice acting stars in their own right, Amazon Prime’sThe Legend of Vox Machinawill feature several big screen celebrities familiar to the nerd world.
The all-star supporting cast of theDungeons and Dragonsseries includes some favorite screen actors in fandom and a couple convention regulars. David Tennant (Doctor Who),Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Felicia Day (The Guild), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Gina Torres (Firefly), and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) will all lend their voices in guest roles, though Amazon did not announce character names or plot details. They will support the main cast composed of theCritical Rolemembers playing their original roleplay characters.

Critical Roleis a wildly popularDungeons and Dragonsliveplay web series featuring some of the best voice actors working in video games, animation, and anime. Fans of tabletop gaming were immediately drawn to the skillful roleplaying and banter among the group of friends and professional actors. Starring Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part II), Taliesin Jaffe (One Piece), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Matthew Mercer (Overwatch), Liam O’Brien (Naruto), Marisha Ray (Metal Gear Survive), and Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), the web series was originally hosted on Felicia Day’sGeek and SundryYoutube channel until Critical Role launched their own Twitch and Youtube channels. Today, Critical Role Productions oversees production and streaming on allCritical Roleepisodes, spin-offs, and even handles a tabletop gaming company.
Critical Role Productions first launched their Kickstarterto fund what would becomeThe Legend of Vox Machinain 2019. They originally described the project as a standalone, 22-minute animation special that could be made on a budget of $750,000. They quickly re-tooled the pitch into a 10-episode series when fans donated $1 million in just a day and closed the Kickstarter after 45 days, having raised more than $11 million. They contracted animation studio Titmouse to begin production on the series, and when Amazon Prime picked up the show they ordered several more episodes and another season. As of now,The Legend of Vox Machinawill consist of 24 episodes across two seasons. Three episodes will be released every Friday starting January 28th.
TheCritical Rolecreators, who all serve as executive producers onThe Legend of Vox Machina, have obviously tapped their network of professional actors to cast these big names in their series. By recruiting some of the nerd world’s favorite stars, the creators have shown they are completely in tune with their audience. Who knows? Maybe somedayCritical Rolefans can watch Gina Torres and David Tennant take down a basilisk on liveplay.
