Torment: Tides of Numeneraisan RPG heavily driven by its impactful narrative. The player will direct the game’s flow through their choices and actions, deciding the ultimate fatesof their companions. In this way, the game is about more than just battle strategies and, instead, relies heavily on social interaction.

The player mustdecide which build to developwhen designing the Last Castoff. Nanos are one of the three available Classes to choose from and will offer the player a unique experience. This Class has a similar appearance to mages and sorcerers but is different. They have mastery over mysterious and ancient technologies. The player needs to develop specific skills, use the right weapons, and increase the stats to make an effective Nano build.

7Boost Intellect At Every Chance

The Nano Class relies heavily on Intellect to be an effective team member. When creating an effective Nano build, the player must increase this stat as often as possible. The Last Castoff will not be a major combative player but will bring more favorable results with dialogues.

Intellect is a measurement of the character’s learning and reasoning abilities. For the Nano build, it determines how quickly Esoteries can be cast or how well the Last Castoff will interact with Numenera. Each time Intellect increases by 2 points, Willpower will also increase by 5%.

6Choose The Ideal Descriptor

InTorment: Tides of Numenera, the player’s character will be defined by their Class, Focus, and Descriptor. The Descriptor essentially describes the Last Castoff and comes with pros and cons. Because the player is trying to create a Nano build, the ideal selection is Intelligent, which increases Intellect by +2 and Anamnesis by +1.

Other good options include Observant, Slick, and Stealthy; however, they come at a price. Slick increases Persuasion and Quick Fingers by +1 each and decreases Endurance by -1. Observant increases Perception and Concentration by +1 each but reduces Running by -1. Stealthy increases Light Weapons, Stealth, and Deception by +1 but decreases Initiative and Running by -1 each. Descriptors to avoid are Charming and Strong, which decrease Intellect.

5Choose The Best Skills

What skills the Last Castoff can effectively use will largely depend upon the Descriptor they choose. They can select three skills at the start of the game to round out their Nano build. The threeprimary skills essentialto an excellent Nano build are Anamnesis, Perception, and Tidal Affinity.

Anamnesis allows the Last Castoff to access memories of previous consciousnesses. This skill should be leveled as often as possible. Perception allows recognition of things others would likely miss, whether visual, aural, or olfactory. Tidal Affinity grants the Last Castoff the ability to control the Tides, increasing the ability to manipulate people and objects using those forces.

4Choose The Best Abilities

Abilities should not be confused with skills, as they are two separate categories. At the start of the game, Nanos automatically have Onslaught, Cypher Limit Increase, and Concentration Increase. Players can then choose two more abilities at the Tier 1 level.

Scan Thoughts isa must-have abilityfor any decent Nano build. While the Last Castoff is speaking with someone, they may overhear the person’s thoughts, gaining critical insights. The other option selection should be either Adaptation or Innervate. Adaptation surrounds the party with nano-spirits, defending them from any damage. It also increases Armor and Resistance for the Last Castoff. Innervate removes negative effects from allies and heals them. It can be used five times per day.

3Choose The Best Focus

The Last Castoff’s Focus will be chosen when the “Fallen to Earth” quest is completed. It provides them with passive and active abilities through leveling up. Master’s Defense is the best option for a Nano Build. It has the potential to make the Last Castoff a serious tank.

Several levels of this Focus draw attacks to the Last Castoff and away from their companions. It also increases armor mastery, allowing for advanced options in what can be equipped.

2Equip The Right Armor

To prevent restriction of movement, the armor equipped in a Nano build should be no heavier than light or medium. Anything heavier will result in possible missed hits due to the bulky nature of the armor. At the beginning stages of the game, the player should focus on using light armor only.

As the game progresses, players can graduate to medium armor, provided they have chosen the Master’s Defense Focus and have reached Tier 2 to receive Armor Mastery. They should then equip Offhand to increase evasion.

1Equip The Right Weapons

Unfortunately, out of the three Classes, Nanos have thefewest options for weaponsavailable to them. The Focus should be on selecting a light weapon for the best build, despite the ability to use both medium and heavy weapons.

An excellent weapon choice for the Nano is Whispers, a light melee artifact. Its Effort comes from Intellect, making it an ideal match for the Class. However, most of the Last Castoff’s actions will be from a distance as a Nano, and they will not be required to be up close to use a melee weapon very often.
