Summary

Trick ‘r Treat2 is finally closer to fruition as the director behind the cult classic gives fans an update on the behind-the-scenes progress of the project, which has been in discussion since 2009.

Trick ‘r Treatis an anthology horror comedy split into four separate stories with a common thread: whenever someone broke a Halloween ‘rule’ or tradition, a trick-or-treating demon named Sam would manifest to set things right. The character Sam is the film’s main attraction and has become as popular among its cult following as the movie itself, so much so thatFunko unveiled aTrick R TreatSam popto celebrate the character. Talk of a sequel has persisted since the original film was released and has been on the wishlist of many horror fans.

Trick ‘r Treat’s cult classic status and quotable lineshave helped it endure in the minds of fans, and that endurance is now paying off with progress on the development of a sequel to the original film. Speaking toCollider, original director Micheal Dougherty revealed that the sequel is finally properly underway. “I will say this, because we said it last year at the Beyond Fest screening, the sequel is in active development with Legendary,” Dougherty confirmed. “I’ll go so far as to say that we have several drafts of a script… I brought back the same storyboard artist I mentioned before, Simeon Wilkins, so we have a stack of storyboards and a good fat stack of concept art done by Breehn Burns as well. So it’s inching along.”

It was indeed announced last year that aTrick ‘r Treatsequel helmed by Doughertywas being developed, but that was about all fans got. Now, the director has offered more information on the progress and the collaboration bringing it to life. “I’m hoping to talk to Legendary,” Dougherty said. “They’ve been wonderful, like great collaborators. But so much of it is timing, and as you know, we just got out of a strike, so the next step, fingers crossed, would be looking at budget, of course, schedule, and all the rest. But we have a really, really great script for a sequel. And I brought in my co-writer from Krampus to do it with me. So Zach Shields and Todd Casey who do Krampus with me also helped me write Trick ‘r Treat Part 2.”

Despite being initially released commercially as a direct-to-DVD and Blu-Ray film,Trick ‘r Treatis no stranger to the theatrical screen, as it originally premiered at some film festivals as early as 2007 and even hadaTrick ‘r Treattheatrical release in 2022for the first time. With the growth of its fanbase over the many years since its release, there’s little doubt that a triumphant theatrical release is firmly on the table for the upcoming sequel film. While the sequel’s long languishing in development hell might have been a negative sign for fan interest and potential at the box office, the opposite might be true, as the cult nature of the fanbase, theatrical re-release, and graphic novel and comic adaptations from DC based on the film has all helped to tide people over.

While the sequel is certainly not close to complete by any means, it will certainly be interesting to seewhat rules the characters will break in theTrick ‘r Treatsequeland how it might link to the original film. Fans must wait to see how it turns out, but they won’t be waiting too much longer.
