In the massive, open world map ofThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, players will have a lot of ground getting from one place to another. While there is fast travel between towers andshrines inBreath of the Wild, the first time Link goes to a new place, he’ll have to walk it. Or, if players have managed to catch a horse, Link can ride there.

Getting on a horse can make moving from one place to the other much faster, and these four-legged friends will keep to the beaten path with very little nudging on the player’s part. But some mounts are better than others, and players will want to get the best possible horses for their trek across Hyrule.

zelda breath of the wild epona

Updated on June 22, 2025 by Renri Seong:Horses are one of the best ways to travel around Hyrule inBreath of the Wild. You can tame and stable them after the Great Plateau, but you’ll notice that each breed of horse has its own star rating. Having a horse with a 2-star spread isn’t bad, but if you’re looking for the fastest and unique horsesBotWhas to offer, you’ll want to look around Hyrule. UnlikeTears of the Kingdom, you can’t change a horse’s stats inBreath of the Wild. Meaning if you want a horse with 5-stars in Speed or Stamina, you’ll have to tame a new one. The following guide has been updated to include a new horse to the list and an image of the map to mark specific locations.

The Best Wild Horses in Breath of the Wild

4-star and 5-star Horses

Wild horses can be found all over the place inBreath of the Wild. Theworst horses in the wild are always spotted, with all their stats being 3-star or lower; the solid-colored horses always have higher stats. However, almost none have more thana single 4-star or higher stat. to guarantee better stats, you will need to looknorth of the Hyrule Ridge.

5-star stamina horses can be found near the cliff (Tanagar Canyon)between the Serene Stable and Maag No’rah Shrine. The stats of these horses can vary. For example, if you’re going for a 5-star Speed horse, it will never have 5-star Stamina or Strength. The wild horses in Hyrule Ridge can be categorized as such:

Wild

If you want to add two stars to your horse’s stamina, you should get theAncient BridleandAncient Saddle. These are part of the Champions' Ballad DLC pack. Your horse will also warp to your side if you call it (down arrow on directional pad). Keep in mind that there are some areaswhere you won’t be able to call the horse.

The Giant Horse

“Ganondorf’s” Horse

While not as impressive in speed, the Giant Horse is one of the three unique horses inBreath of the Wild. Just as its name indicates, the Giant Horse is a large black stallion with an orange mane that probablybrings to mind a certain character. Despite its “dark” looks, the Giant Horse isn’t any more antagonistic than a regular horse. However, he’s arguably the hardest to get out of all the horses inBreath of the Wild. Link will needa little over two whole stamina ringsjust to tame him.

You need to show Straia the giant horse in order to complete the “Hunt for the Giant Horse” side quest. Straia can be found at the Mounted Archery Camp in Harfin Valley (south of the Lake Tower).

The Giant Horse roams theTaobab Grasslands, southwest of the Owa Daim Shrine. It’s surrounded by other horses, so the easiest way to tame it without alerting the others is to use the paraglider from a distance and “land” on its back. Once you’ve soothed it, you can bring it to the closest stable to register it. InBreath of the Wild, the closest stable for the Giant Horse is theHighland Stable.

The Giant Horse is uniquein that he has no Stamina, so you may’t use the A-button to make him gallop faster. You also won’t be able to change his mane no matter how high your affection level is. He also cannot be equipped with the Ancient Horse Gear. However, he has 5-star Strength, meaning you can have him barrel into just about any critter or small monster and kill it in one hit.

The Royal White Stallion

Descendant of Princess Zelda’s Horse

When you get to the Outskirt Stable, you can speak with Toffa, one of the NPCs outside the inn, to get the quest to find the Royal White Stallion. This horse is said to be a direct descendent of Princess Zelda’s horse from 100 years ago. He is distinct from other horses by his solid white coat and incredible stats. After getting the Royal While Stallion Side Quest, head toNima Plain. It is located justwest of the Sanidin Park Ruinswhere one ofLink’s photo memoriescan be restored. The White Horse’s stats are:

Epona

Horse of Legend

Epona is Link’s iconic horse, but unfortunately, she can only be obtained by scanning the Smash Bros.Link amiibo. The amiibo rune unlocks once you’ve left the Great Plateau. While none of Epona’s stats break 5-star, she’s still arguably the best horse inBreath of the Wild. Like the Giant Horse, you won’t be able to style Epona’s mane or equip her with the Ancient Bridle or Ancient Saddle. You also can’t change her name. However, she has a Gentle Temperament, meaning she’s easy to control and won’t throw Link off if her stamina’s out. As a bonus, she has maxed out affection when you go to register her at the stable.

Untameable Horses in Breath of the Wild

Lord of the Mountain, Stalhorses

There are a handful of mounts inBreath of the Wildthatcannot be registered at stables. This includes deer, bears, undead horses, and horse spirits. There are also special horses, such as the Stalhorse and the mythical Lord of the Mountain.

Stalhorses are undead, all-bone horses that are often ridden by bokoblins. They’ll die at daybreak (4am in-game), can’t be registered, and have weak stats. However, if you ride one while wearing the Radiant Set, the Stalhorse’s stats will be boosted. Without the Radiant Set, the Stalhorse’s stats are estimated as follows:

Temperament:

Gentle

The Lord of the Mountain, Satori, has infinite stamina. He is amazingly difficult to tame, moreso than the Giant Horse, so if you’re set on taming him, bring loads of stamina food and equip stealth-enhancing gear. The Stealth Set/Sheikah Gear is idealfor sneaking up on Satori. You can tell if Satori will appear if Satori Mountain is glowing at night. You’ll find Satori and a pack of Blupees by the lake near the Mogg Latan Shrine.

Satori is the only mount to have 5-stars in every stat. Tapping the A-button to gallop faster won’t drain one of the Stamina Wheels. You won’t be able to feed anything to Satori, since he’ll disappear when you dismount him. Although he can’t be registered, youcanbring him to a stable owner to see their reaction.
