Still, it’s a solid entry in the looter shooter franchise, and fans can revisit it/newcomers can try it for free. Those hoping for something on the same level for May 26 should temper expectations, however.

The reasoning for this is pretty simple: past mystery games in May. Epic Games Store gave away one mystery game in May 2020 and two mystery games in May 2021. The first wasGrand Theft Auto 5, which proved to be so popular on the service that the Epic Games Store was overloaded with users. May 2021 is the big month for comparison, of course, as it gave awayNBA 2K21 first—a big popular game, if only for sports fans—but it ultimately holds up to the same level of popularity asGrand Theft Auto 5andBorderlands 3.
It would only make sense then if thesecond mystery game on the Epic Games Store this Maywas on a similar level to the second of May 2021. The thing is, May 2021’s second free mystery game wasAmong Us. All in all,Among Usis a pretty cheap title on PC and consoles, but it certainly wasn’t a bad pick.Among Ushit its stride during the pandemic, amassing a ton of players and seeing a surge in popularity.Among Us 2was actually canceledso the developer could focus on improving the first game, and while that popularity may have dropped off a bit, it still has a special place in fans’ hearts.

So instead of expecting a big AAA game for the second mystery game, fans should expect a beloved indie title instead. The mystery aspect means it’s likely bigger and more popular than some ofEpic Games Store’s indie choices of the past, but expecting a big AAA game is likely to end in disappointment. Now, with only having last year to go off of, it’s entirely possible Epic Games Store does something big again, but it’s better to expect less and get more than to have high expectations for no reason and disappoint one’s self.
Epic Games Store Free Mystery Game for May 26 – What Could It Be
With Epic Games Store only giving away two games in May 2021, it’s likely that the May 26 game is the last mystery game this year too. So, Epic Games Store needs to go out with a bang but also, likely, choose a stellar indie game to give out for free. While it’s impossible to predict, there are a few good choices. If looking for a relatively recent, popular indie game, it’s hard to imagine Epic Games Store not giving awayRogue Legacy 2right now. Its recent release may upset some fans, but at the same time,Rogue Legacy 2has stellar reviewsmaking the purchase worth it and perhaps making it the best giveaway possible right now.
Coming from indie developer Cellar Door Games, it’s super important thatRogue Legacyperforms well sales-wise too, but a deal with EGS could be hard to pass up (especially sinceRogue Legacy 1was freenot too long ago). For similar reasons, other good choices could include something likeDeath’s Door, Omno, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, Night in the Woods, and plenty more. Ultimately, it all remains to be seen, but fans will know come May 26.
