Summary
World of Warcraftfans are suspicious of Drenden, an NPC who quietly joined the Council of Six in Patch 10.2.7. TheseWorld of Warcraftplayers think the archmage could be working with the antagonists, and will be instrumental in causing some of the conflicts inThe War Within.
The Council of Six is the ruling body of archmagi for the Kirin Tor of Dalaran. Many major mage characters in history, includingiconicWorld of Warcraftheroes like Jaina, Khadgar, and Kalecgos, have held seats on the council for a time. However, in Patch 10.2.5, Kalecgos voluntarily vacated his seat so he could focus on restoring the Blue Dragonflight.

As of Patch 10.2.7, Dark Heart,World of Warcrafthas filled the spot on the council. While visiting the Dalaran during the update’s story campaign, players overhear a conversation between Karlain and his friend and former fellow council member, Drenden. They reminisce briefly, after which Drenden expresses his gratitude to his friend for being accepted back so readily, promising “to put those talents to good use.” The character’s sudden return and suspicious dialogue have led many to suspect he may be working with Xal’atath, themain villain ofWoW: The War Within.
Who is Archmage Drenden in World of Warcraft?
Drenden was a former member of the Council of Six backduring the time ofWarcraft 2. He played a minor role inDay of the Dragon, where he was nearly killed by one of Deathwing’s traps, and also appeared briefly inRoad to Damnation, a short story detailing Kel’thuzad’s exile from Dalaran, though he left the council at some point afterward. That said, he never appeared inWorld of Warcraftproper, and has not been mentioned or seen for nearly 20 years – both in real life and the game’s timeline.
There are a lot of reasons why players are suspicious of Drenden. The mage doesn’t look like he has aged a day, despite the fact he has to be at least 50 or 60 by now, if not older. There are other candidates that would have made more sense on the council as well – like Blood Elf and former council member Aethas Sunreaver, who would also have brought some Horde representation back to the city. That said, given thefate of Dalaran in the first part ofWorld of Warcraft: The War Within, many fans think Drenden tricked his way into the council to help the bad guys.
Fans likely won’t have to wait long to discover Drenden’s true colors. The expansion is coming out later this year, so players should keep an eye out duringThe War Within Pre-Patch,likely coming toWorld of Warcraftin a few months, to see if their theories prove correct.
